WASHINGTON – Conservatives balking at President Bush's proposal to grant illegal immigrants three-year work permits are floating a counteroffer that would hamper his efforts to woo Hispanic voters in November's election. It's a dicey political predicament for the president, one that seems likely to push a final vote on key elements of his plan into 2005, well after the November balloting. Rep. Charlie Norwood, R-Ga., and Sens. Zell Miller, D-Ga., and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., are conditioning their support for Bush's plan on Congress agreeing to also broaden the power of state and local police to arrest suspected illegal residents. "If...

Al Gore has charged that the Bush administration is attempting to cover-up the 9/11 investigation by dismissing the Senate Intelligence Committee. In a speech sponsored by the Communist Group Moveon.org, Gore dismissed the partisan Democrat memo advising the committee to use intelligence information for political purposes as "trivial", and accused Bush of over-reaching in his authority, in much the same way as Richard Nixon did when he fired his Chief Investigator during the Watergate scandal. It was reported here that Senator Frist disbanded the Senate Intellignce Committee after the partisan memo revealed it would be unable to carry out its...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Vice President Al Gore accused President Bush on Sunday of failing to make the country safer after the Sept. 11 attacks and using the war against terrorism as a pretext to consolidate power. "They have taken us much farther down the road toward an intrusive, 'big brother'-style government - toward the dangers prophesied by George Orwell in his book '1984' - than anyone ever thought would be possible in the United States of America," Gore charged. Gore, who lost the disputed 2000 presidential election to Bush, said terrorism-fighting tools granted after Sept. 11 amount to a...

Norwood City Council decided Tuesday to take nine different properties by using eminent domain. The declaration from Norwood council means the homes and businesses near Edwards Road will be taken for a new development. All but nine homes and business owners have agreed to sell to a developer who is planning on a $125 million expansion of Rookwood Commons mall. Earlier Tuesday, those nine home and business owners filed a suit, refusing to sell saying their neighborhood isn't blighted. The neighbors still holding-out are asking a judge to step in and stop the city from going any further.

Chairman John Hostettler’s (R.-Ind.) House Subcommittee on Immigration will hold a hearing on the Clear Law Enforcement for Criminal Alien Removal Act (CLEAR) in September, making it one of the few pieces of immigration enforcement legislation that may get a vote on the House floor in this Congress. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Charlie Norwood (R.-Ga.), would make it easier for local law enforcement agencies to enforce some immigration laws and reimburse them for the cost of doing so. "Miguel Angelo Gordoba is a child molester and illegally in our country. In August 2001, he finished a four-year sentence at...
