JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) -- A 990-pound (450-kilogram), bedridden man who had appealed on Mexican television for help tackling his weight problem died Tuesday of heart failure, his family said. Jose Luis Garza, 47, tipped the scales at almost 1,000 pounds before his death. Emergency officials had to knock down Jose Luis Garza's bedroom wall and load him onto the back of a friend's pickup as he fought for his life. The 47-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in northern Mexico.

The Richland County, South Carolina Sheriff's Department (that's them above) just obtained an armored personnel carrier, complete with a belt-fed, .50-cal turreted machine gun. Sheriff Leon Lott has charmingly named the vehicle "The Peacemaker," and insists that using a caliber of ammunition that even the U.S. military is reluctant to use against human targets (it's generally reserved for use against armored vehicles) will "save lives."

Actress blogs that Sarah Palin should focus on campaign, not daughter's pregnancy. While speaking to the delegates of the Republican National Convention on Monday, vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin announced that her 17-year-old-daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant. The chatter sparked by the news included a few words from someone who knows what it's like to be a teenage girl in the public eye: Lindsay Lohan took to her MySpace blog to weigh in on the issue. "Well, I think the real problem comes from the fact that we are taking the focus off of getting to know Sarah Palin and her...

With news broadcasts dominated by election coverage, the Edwards scandal and Russian Invasion of Georgia, the news has been slow to spread that Warner Brothers announced yesterday that they were postponing the November Release of Harry Potter: Half-Blood Prince until July of 2009. If you hadn't previously heard the news then I apologize for being the one to break it to you. Congress leader invokes blessings of Hanuman NEW DELHI: Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama can now expect help from an unexpected quarter — Lord Hanuman. All-India Congress Committee member Brij Mohan Bhama has organised a 11-day religious ceremony at Karol Bagh here for his success in the U.S. elections. The idea of sending an idol of Hanuman dawned on him after friends in the United States mentioned a “prominent American politician who carried a miniature Hanuman idol in his pocket for luck,” Mr. Bhama said speaking on the first day of the ceremony on Tuesday. “After hearing that, I decided to...

We can't tell you her name but she was able to tell a jury about what happened to her. And her determination to recount some of the most incredible savagery ever heard in a courtroom is testimony to her courage and her desire to see justice done. The recall of a Columbia University student that unfolded in a New York City hall of justice on Monday was almost too hard to hear. The 24-year-old victim sat in the witness box with her jaw clenched and her mind focused, as she retold the unimaginable ordeal she claims she suffered at the...

U.S. employers cut payrolls for a second straight month during February, slashing 63,000 jobs for the biggest monthly decline in nearly five years as the nation's labor markets weakened steadily, a government report on Friday showed. The Labor Department said last month's cut followed an upwardly revised loss of 22,000 jobs in January rather than the 17,000 reported a month ago. It also said only 41,000 jobs were created in December, half the 82,000 originally reported. "This confirms the fears that have been lurking in the financial markets in recent weeks. The probability of a U.S. recession is at more...

Palestinian rights advocacy organization Filasteen, the Chicano Caucus, and other student organizations assembled a human wall on Low Plaza stretching from one fountain to the next yesterday afternoon to demonstrate the injustice created by the security fence in Israel and one being built along the Mexico-U.S. border. At the event, demonstrators chanted, and several students were given the opportunity to speak. Eventually, the human wall was unlinked, symbolizing organizers' call to take down the existing physical walls. "It was a speak-out against walls in general, which can ruin an economy and suffocate people," Tina Musa, CC '09 and a member...

The seas have been rising for 18,000 years, but the pace has quickened. At the Golden Gate Bridge, the Pacific Ocean crept seven inches higher during the past century, as global warming melted glaciers and expanded ocean waters. Californians are taking notice. In one of the first efforts of its kind in the state, officials are starting to address the threats rising seas pose to the Bay Area. One of the first steps was to compile maps that show what would happen if the sea level rose three feet -- the upper limit for what might occur by 2100, according...

A confidential analysis of Internet search queries and a random sample of Web pages taken from Google and Microsoft's giant Internet indices showed that only about 1 percent of all Web pages contain sexually explicit material. The analysis was presented during a federal court hearing last week in Philadelphia in a suit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and obtained on Monday by the Mercury News. The ACLU said the analysis, by Philip B. Stark, a professor of statistics at the University of California, Berkeley, did not appear to substantially help the Department of...
