BALTIMORE — Former Maryland U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes has died. His son, U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes, released a statement late Sunday night, saying: "My father, Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes, passed away peacefully this evening in Baltimore. Following state, local and public health guidance amid the COVID-19 pandemic, our family will hold a private service in the coming days." Sen. Sarbanes served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1971 to 1977 before being elected to the Senate, where he served for 30 years. He announced his retirement in 2006.

If you’re wondering why this otherwise prosaic Bloomberg piece about Pence’s national future begins with a mention of the Koch brothers, it’s probably because the guy who wrote it worked for Paul Sarbanes and, briefly, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz before resuming his career as an impartial reporter. But never mind that. Is Pence the dark horse? “I have no doubt that he would make a great president,” said Steven Chancellor, the chief executive officer of Evansville, Indiana-based American Patriot Group, the parent of a company that makes ready-to-eat rations for the Pentagon. “He certainly distinguished himself in the House” and is “off...

July 7,2006 The Honorable Paul S. Sarbanes 309 Hart Senate Office Building Washington DC, 20510 Dear Senator Sarbanes: As a native Californian and excellent customer of the Internal Revenue Service, I am writing to ask for your assistance. I have contacted the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to determine the process for becoming an illegal alien and they referred me to you. My primary reason for wishing to change my status from U.S.Citizen to illegal alien stem from the bill which was recently passed by the Senate and for which you voted. If my understanding of this bill's provisions...

Today would have been my Father’s 100th birthday. There aren’t many folks left who will remember that, and take note. But I do, and here’s his story. Before I sat down to write this, I read an e-mail about a lady who wrote about “A Simple White Envelope.” Her story began: “It's just a small white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years or so. “It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas -- oh, not the...

BALTIMORE (AP) -- John P. Sarbanes, the son of Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes, has announced his candidacy for Maryland's 3rd Congressional District seat, saying health care and public education reform would be his top priorities. Mr. Sarbanes joins a crowded field of Democrats running for the seat being vacated by Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, a Democrat. The 3rd Congressional District includes parts of Baltimore city and Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Howard counties. Mr. Cardin is running for the Senate seat held by Mr. Sarbanes' father, who is retiring.
  • Judicial Confirmation Hypocrisy-(Dems pontificating on "NO Filibuster," when they had majority)

As the Senate moves closer to a vote on the Constitutional Option – a vote to end the filibusters against President Bush’s judicial nominees – Senate Democrats have ramped up their rhetoric in an effort to defeat the measure. But it was these very same filibustering Senators who once argued that judicial nominees deserved up-or-down votes on the Senate floor. Don’t take our word for it. Here they are, in their own words… Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) "What I am saying to my friend is that in addition to what I have just said, we now have 30 nominations...
  • Exit A Scalawag, Enter Opportunity - (Jeffords, Sarbanes leaving; chance for new Republican seats)

The departures of Jim Jeffords (I-VT) and Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) will result in competitive US Senate elections in 2006 in two states where Republicans are not historically strong, though the special circumstances that apply to those seats make them within reach of the GOP. The former will have special meaning for Republicans since its occupant unilaterally handed control of the US Senate to the opposing party from 2001 to 2003. Because the Republicans enjoyed a historic victory in the 2002 midterms, the actions of the Benedict Arnold from the home of Ethan Allen had limited implications, aside from giving the...

WASHINGTON - It was a spring-like Monday morning here as Afghan leader Hamid Karzai watched a hastily sewn flag rise over the long-abandoned Afghan embassy. Much like Mr. Karzai's desperate nation, the dilapidated embassy is a testimony to neglect, with peeling paint, leaky roofs, sagging walls, and termites. Still, no one seemed to notice. Speaking of shared US-Afghan pain, partnership, and hope, Karzai dignified the moment. He seemed sincere, yet polished - even, some would say, chic. "Tie it well, Haron," said Karzai, looking on in a silver lamb's-wool cap, flowing tunic, and emerald cape as his chargé d'affairs ...
