Nine months ago, having a green "Wellstone!" bumper sticker on your car was like wearing a black band on your arm. For a few days at least, before the ill-fated memorial service made people crazy with partisan feuding, people walked a respectful distance around your grief. Now, nine months after that plane crash, a friend of mine finds that her bright green bumper sticker and lawn sign have a rather different effect. Regularly, she finds the words "commie," "socialist" and others I can't print here scratched into the dust that coats her car. Twice she's been flipped off, for no...

  • Wellstone bumper stickers stir debate

Nine months after Sen. Paul Wellstone's fatal plane crash, some DFLers are outraged by what they consider disrespectful bumper sticker messages printed in Wellstone's green and white. One spotted on a car parked near the State Capitol reads: "It's time to park the bus," a reference to Wellstone's campaign vehicle. Another spotted around town said, "He's dead, get over it."

Rally may have soured voters Wellstone memorial turned into political event, analysts say 11/27/2002 Associated Press ST. PAUL, Minn. - In hindsight, the first mistake might have been holding a memorial service in a big basketball arena. Then there was the bank of Jumbotron screens, live on C-SPAN. The Oct. 29 service for Sen. Paul Wellstone after he was killed in a plane crash turned into a political pep rally that turned off many voters. Analysts say it not only led to the defeat of Mr. Wellstone's stand-in, Walter Mondale, but also might have contributed to the Democrats' setbacks...

With the Democratic Party still trying to find an identity and direction in the wake of the humiliating midterm elections, it's amazing and bewildering that a clear course of action — a resonant and resounding theme — has not yet been vocalized by party leaders in Washington, D.C., or Washington state: Become Paul Wellstone Democrats. Wellstone — though passionately liberal — was noted for his civility. The Minnesota senator, who died in a plane crash Oct. 25, did not attack or disparage opponents or their ideas; he advanced his beliefs, and would put forth compelling reasons why you should...
  • New Prime Time Show About Liberal Senator, “The Left Chamber”?

NBC has a prime time drama about the White House titled The West Wing, though it’s affectionately dubbed “The Left Wing” because of its liberal crusading. Will we soon be referring to a new prime time drama about a U.S. Senator and his staff as “The Left Hill” or “The Left Chamber”?     Quite possibly yes, judging by a glimpse at the upcoming show offered by CNN’s Bill Schneider on Friday’s Inside Politics in which the actor playing the Senator told him Paul Wellstone is the model for his character and the actress playing his Press Secretary cited Nancy Pelosi as...

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 — State polls showing that more than half a dozen Senate seats were still within either party's grasp prompted Republicans and Democrats today to intensify their feverish campaigns for control of the chamber. Seeking to influence the truly undecided voters — and to make sure those who have made up their minds go to the polls — both parties marshaled volunteers to ring doorbells and hand out leaflets. They also paraded big-name politicians and star-quality supporters before the cameras and drowned out commercials for consumer goods with advertisements extolling their candidates and assailing their opponents. Politicians and...

Aaron Brown thinks a lot of himself and sees the world through the e-mail he receives. On Wednesday night he decided that he’s “annoyed at both political parties,” adopting the FNC slogan as he boasted that “you can’t be more fair and balanced than that.” The reasons for his ire: One party misused the memorial service for the late Senator Wellstone while the other was responsible for Brown having to endure a dozen identical e-mails complaining about it.      Brown began his “Page Two” commentary, at the start of the October 30 NewsNight on CNN, by saying that “calling it...
  • Bush, Cheney to Stump for Coleman in Minnesota

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney will make campaign stops in Minnesota in the coming days, as a political mourning period for Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone gives way to an all-out push for Republican Senate candidate Norm Coleman. The White House announced the trips on Thursday in routine campaign schedule updates. Cheney is to appear at a Republican rally in Hermantown, Minnesota, on Friday and Bush is to visit Minneapolis on Sunday, two days before Tuesday's election. First lady Laura Bush will also travel to Minnesota to make a campaign stop on Saturday for Coleman, the...

THE (POSSIBLE) ASSASSINATION OF PAUL WELLSTONE Wed Oct 30,10:03 PM ET By Ted Rall George W. Bush's Legacy of Cynicism and Contempt George W. Bush and his henchmen stole the presidency. They threw thousands of innocent people into prison without even charging them with a crime. They're gearing up to invade Iraq without bothering to come up with a substantial justification. Now some Democrats and progressive Americans are asking the unthinkable about an administration they increasingly believe to be ruled by thugs and renegades. Did government gangsters murder the United States' most liberal legislator? Talk of foul play began...

<p>Journalists usually relish a juicy surprise twist in the humdrum world of politics, but the news media weren't thrilled when the tone unexpectedly shifted during Tuesday night's Paul Wellstone memorial.</p> <p>Switchboards lit up when Rick Kahn, a Wellstone friend and campaign treasurer, and Sen. I quickly channeled surfed all three of these Networks a few minutes ago and they ALL had negative stories about the Wellstone "Memorial Service." This looks to be a backfiring PR disaster for the Demmycrats if even the liberal networks have no choice but to report negatively on this. BTW, CBS led into the story about that "Memorial Service" with a silly negative story about how Norm Coleman was somehow besmirching the memory of Paul Wellstone because he flew around Minnesota today in the same kind of jet that Wellstone used when he crashed. That's the worst they can say...

.....Minnesota is also the home state of U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone, currently serving his second term. Like Ventura, Wellstone promised to serve no more than two terms in his office. Except, guess what, he has just announced that he will indeed run for a third term as Senator. I just hope the Senator one day finds his way back into the light. That may be sooner than he plans. A recent statewide poll shows that most Minnesotans, 55 percent, feel that Wellstone is morally obligated to step down in 2002
