The Spinners helped create the sound of an era with a parade of soul and pop hits beginning in 1973. Their music has lived on thanks to its sly sophistication, love-struck lyrics and timeless hooks. The lineup whittled down over the years to stalwart Henry Fambrough and a group of newer collaborators, but the songs – and memories of the camaraderie – remain: "The other guys are gone, but they're still with us any time we sing," Fambrough told Billboard. "This group's bigger than any one of us." After a slow start at Motown, the Spinners switched to Atlantic Records...

On Friday night, a viral video depicting the extrajudicial police killing of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old unarmed Black man from Memphis, prompted helicopters in Philly to hover near my house in West Philly. The reason? Media and police were preparing for potential mass protests following the public outcry. The situation was infuriating. There was so much premeditated presumption of a potential riot, damaged property, and another racial uprising. I began to be triggered by the last time such a viral traumatic video caused an uproar. In 2020, the extrajudicial police killing of George Floyd, another unarmed Black man, led to...

A thunderous explosion rocked a Philadelphia neighborhood, injuring five people — one critically — and leveling at least two homes just hours into 2023, according to city fire officials. The Sunday eruption that blew out windows and doors and sent cars flying — on top of the two wiped-out homes — appeared to be from a gas leak, fire officials said. Two people were pulled from the rubble and three others were treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital, the Philadelphia Fire Department reported about the blast in the city’s Port Richmond section around 2:50 a.m. “We...

Barack Obama took to the stage in Michigan in late October to warn the crowd of the dangers of political rhetoric. He repeated similar claims during a rally Saturday night in Philadelphia. While not identifying any person or group in particular, it was evident that he meant the Republicans. He brought up the dangers of people standing outside voting booths armed to try to intimidate voters. Yet, Obama was singing a different tune in 2008 when the New Black Panther Party did this very same thing in Philadelphia. They harassed voters, verbally threatened poll watchers trying to enter, and called...

During a forum hosted by the Philadelphia Real Estate Alliance, Driscoll said he met with Wawa representatives the day after a store in Mayfair, which is in his district, was ransacked by an estimated 100 juveniles. “The scariest part to me is one of the senior officials said, ‘We’re seriously considering moving out of the city of Philadelphia in our strategic planning, at least not to expand,’” Driscoll...

Philadelphia is poised to bar its cops from pulling drivers over for minor traffic violations — like broken tail lights and bumper issues — which will make it the first major US city to enact so-called “driving while black” legislation. The Driving Equality Bill, passed earlier this month by the City Council, could be signed as early as this week by Mayor Jim Kenney, according to CNN. The package of bills would classify vehicle registration infractions, broken brake lights and flouting inspection evidence regulations as “secondary” violations, meaning police would be prohibited from pulling motorists over if those traffic infractions...
