The holiday season came and went, and it appears the U.S. Postal Service did a good job. Yes, there were some reports of letter carriers getting swamped with packages here and there. And, yes, there were citizen complaints about delivery delays and mail theft. But on the whole, the USPS delivered in late 2023. There was no systemic crack-up as there was in December of 2020, when bad weather, sick mail workers and other factors slowed holiday cards and gifts for days and even weeks.

CHICAGO — A former U.S. Postal Service employee based in Chicago has been indicted on federal charges for allegedly stealing stimulus checks from the mail. Olivia Bryant, 33, of Chicago, has been charged with three counts of theft from the U.S. mail. During her arraignment, Bryant pleaded not guilty.

Effective this Sunday, the U.S. Postal Service will implement two parcel-delivery surcharges that will make it costlier for high-volume shippers to move their bigger packages. The manager of a Kenner post office stole $630,000 worth of stamps and sold them online after losing more than $667,000 while gambling in recent years, federal authorities said this week.
