Jeffrey and Jermaine, a pair of black-and-white pit bull mix puppies from Philadelphia who rocked the animal rescue world with their story in mid-November, have settled into their new home together. The duo, now 8 months old, were rescued by Operation Ava after being picked up as strays by animal-control officers in early October. Jeffrey is blind and Jermaine acts as his guide-dog, leading his brother around in new environments. A photo of the pair entwined while sleeping in their kennel at the rescue shelter was shared around the world overnight. The couple is introducing Jeffrey to small areas at...

Hi, everyone. :) We just bought a black lab who is about six weeks old; a female. I just brought her outside; she had napped next to me and was sound asleep on the couch as I dozed off. I then brought her out and put her in her crate, because she pees and poos all over the house. How do I train this puppy--and how can I get her to stop crying at night. The last couple of nights, I could not stand the crying, so I brought her up to my husband and my bed. Even now, she...

At 11:15am or so today, May 2, 2013, I tuned into the WV Statewide Talkline hosted by Hoppy Kercheval. A woman, identified later as being from the state ASPCA, was talking about the tragedy of ten bodies of what appeared to be pit bull puppies being found in a bag along the highway. They were in advanced stages of decomposition. The cause of death was not apparent. She spoke of an official investigation into the whys and wherefores of their deaths. She stated that the bodies had been sent to a Virginia university for necropsy to be performed on each...

There's little a mother wouldn't do to save her babies, and that includes rescuing them one-by-one from a house fire. Photos of a dog in Chile apparently carrying all five of her 10-day-old puppies from a burning house then placing them in the back of a fire truck made the rounds on social media Saturday.

Meet Holly’s Half Dozen. These six Golden Retriever pups were born on June 24th and have already begun very important work — helping to heal the invisible wounds of our Nation’s Combat Veterans. Recovering Service Members at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the National Intrepid Center of Excellence in Bethesda, MD are engaged in the critical task of socializing the pups through puppy petting. The litter of five girls and one boy will spend the next two years lifting the spirits of Wounded Warriors and giving them a therapeutic and purposeful mission. By volunteering to train the pups...

A new program in San Francisco will pair carefully selected dogs from shelters with panhandlers in an effort to steer the latter away from asking for money on the streets and keep the animals from being euthanized. The temporary guardians (the words "pet" and "owner" are frowned upon in San Francisco) will receive weekly stipends of $50 to $75 and must agree to jettison their cardboard signs in the pilot project believed to be the first of its kind in the country. The program, scheduled to start in August, is called WOOF, short for Wonderful Opportunities for Occupants and Fidos....

Dog breeders who skirt animal welfare laws by selling puppies over the Internet would face tighter scrutiny under a rule change proposed Thursday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The change would subject dog owners who breed more than four females and sell the puppies electronically, by mail or over the phone to the same oversight faced by wholesale dealers as part of the Animal Welfare Act. That law, written in 1966, set standards of care for animals bred for commercial sale and research. Retail sales were exempt from inspections under the assumption that anyone who visited the store could...

This week, she was given a clean bill of health from Folsom veterinarian, Dr Jennifer Sweet DVM.Beyonce was not breathing when she was born and had to be resuscitated. At birth, she was so small that she fit into a spoon and weighed one ounce (28 grams). Anderson, IN - Dennis Duane White, 46, has been formally charged with 15 felony counts of animal cruelty following the slaying of a mother dog and her eight puppies. According to the Star Press, the formal charges were made against White on Tuesday. White's alleged violent rampage happened last month following a dispute over a tax refund with his girlfriend. White is accused of trying to strangle his girlfriend after she refused to hand over her tax refund to him. The woman's dog, Coco, apparently tried to intervene on the behalf of her distraught guardian by biting the White on...

It's little wonder that with such cute faces peering out over the edge of their plastic bowl, these eight abandoned puppies have found new homes. But their futures could have been a lot bleaker. The puppies and their mother, a mongrel named Amy, had been found by a farmer stuffed inside a bale of hay on his land in Newark. But now, following an appeal by local newspaper the Lincolnshire Echo, the eight six-week old puppies have found caring owners ... The mother was discovered with a rope tied around her neck which she had bitten through. ...
  • Santa's little yelpers: Eight pups pining for new home for Christmas

Christmas is a time for families. Unfortunately these eight adorable little puppies don’t have one of their own. Dumped on the caring staff at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London by their owner just a few days ago, the litter is now available for rehoming. Seasonally named after Santa’s reindeer – from left to right Dasher, Cupid, Prancer, Donner, Dancer, Comet, Blitzen and Vixen – the black, white and tan pups are mongrels and, although their breed is unknown, are likely to grow quite big. The mischievous pups will, however, spend Christmas at the home alongside 500 other dogs...

t's not quite 101 Dalmatians. But when two-year-old Pebbles gave birth to 15 tiny puppies, she and her owners found their paws were more than full. The litter is more than twice the average size for a Dalmatian, and the trials of motherhood initially took their toll. Owner Kay Sullivan, 45, said: 'We had to care for [the puppies] for two days because Pebbles was not very well. ...

When three-year-old Romy went into labour her owners knew they had a long night ahead of them. But when she started to give birth at their Coventry home she didn’t stop until an astonishing 15 Irish setter puppies were born. The amazing feat was almost double the average of a traditional litter of eight or nine and not far off the UK record. . . . The squealing newborns, a healthy 10 girls and five boys, weighed between 275 and 339 grams.

  • Taking dogs from their litter too young 'makes them aggressive'

    08/27/2011 2:44:20 PM PDT · by afraidfortherepublic · 125 replies
Seperating puppies from their litter too early can turn them into aggressive dogs, say scientists. They are significantly more likely to display problematic behaviour as adults than those who stay for at least two months. This raises the risk that they will be abandoned by their owners. Researchers studied 140 dogs aged between 18 months and seven years. Half had been taken from the litter and adopted between the ages of 30 and 40 days, and half had been taken at 60 days. FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) A college student home for the summer came across a strange box in the middle of the road in the Florence, only to find two abandoned puppies. When Florence resident Dani Ball opened the taped box she found two puppies, left to die on the side of the road. Ball says instinct took over and she was determined to save the small animals. "I've been crawling around in dog cages since I [could] crawl," laughs Ball. Dani was babysitting when she got a call from a neighbor about a mysterious package sitting on the side of the...

All of these dogs were rescued from being shot by the local reservation Animal Control(FWP) in Montana, so they are safe now. I am trying to help Rene and Anita find foster homes or even better yet forever homes for them. There are lots of puppies not pictured yet as they have a small "cough" that Rene wants a vet to take a look at first. Once she gets an OK from the vet, they will either be transferred to another rescue or to permanent homes if possible. The ones that say pregnant females on them have places to go...
