I caught up with this story last week but didn’t bring it up before now, mostly because it was just too sad. The tale in question revolves around a court case featuring Darryl Lee Wright. Darryl volunteered to serve his country in the National Guard and was deployed to Iraq in 2005. While there, his vehicle was struck by an enemy rocket, injuring Mr. Wright physically and leaving him with severe PTSD to the point where he was completely crippled in terms of interacting with normal society. He was eventually awarded the Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge. Returning home...

(CNN)Khizr Khan on Tuesday accused Donald Trump of dodging the Vietnam War draft, and said he shouldn't have accepted a Purple Heart given to him at a rally earlier in the day, deeming it the latest sign of his inability to empathize with parents of fallen soldiers. "You dodged the draft," Khan, a Muslim whose son was slain in the Iraq War, said of Trump to CNN's Anderson Cooper. "Put that Purple Heart back on that person's chest." A military veteran supporting Trump had gifted the Republican presidential nominee his Purple Heart, prompting Trump to say he "always wanted to...

Lt. Col. Louis Dorfman has so much confidence in Donald Trump, he gave the presidential candidate his Purple Heart medal. “He handed me his Purple Heart,” Trump told an audience in Ashburn, Virginia. “I said to him, is that like the real one or is that a copy? And he said that’s my real Purple Heart,” Trump said. “I have such confidence in you,” Trump said Dorfman told him. He then invited Dorfman onto the stage to pose for a photo as the crowd chanted “USA! USA! USA!”

The most potent moment of the Democratic convention last week was when Khizr Khan, father of an Army captain killed in Iraq in 2004, challenged Donald Trump's proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States. "You have sacrificed nothing and no one," Khan said to Trump, holding aloft a copy of the Constitution that he suggested Trump read. Trump's immediate response was to criticize Khan and his wife, earning a number of rebukes from veterans and members of his own party. "There are certain sacrosanct subjects that no amount of wordsmithing can repair once crossed," said a statement from...

A man Donald Trump introduced as retired Lt. Col. Louis Dorfman presented the Republican presidential nominee with his Purple Heart before a rally Tuesday in Virginia. “I said to him, ‘Is that like the real one, or is that a copy?” Mr. Trump recalled in his speech at a high school in Ashburn. He said the veteran assured him that the medal was real, saying, “I have such confidence in you.” “Man, that’s like big stuff,” Mr. Trump said. “I always wanted to get the Purple Heart — this was much easier. But I’ll tell you, it was such an...

The true story of Garlin Murl Conner’s heroism in the face of a Nazi onslaught might have gone to the grave with the soft-spoken Kentucky farmer if not for a chance phone call from another military man trying to piece together the last days of his uncle’s life. ***snip*** The bravery of Conner, who died in 1998 at the age of 79, is well-documented. The first lieutenant, who was wounded seven times, earned an incredible four Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars, seven Purple Hearts and the Distinguished Service Cross for his World War II heroism. But it was what he...

SPRINGFIELD — He was a hero right to the end, according to those who served with Marine Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, one of four Marines killed in a deadly attack in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Thursday, in what some officials are calling an ISIS-inspired attack. Sullivan, a Springfield native raised in East Forest Park, was running to save his wounded colleagues when he, too, was shot. He didn't survive. Known as "Gunny" to his fellow Marines, Sullivan "died a hero yesterday," Marine Sgt. Amanda Vincent told Sullivan's family, who gathered Friday at the Hampden home of his parents, Gerry and Betty...
