Russian farmers are breeding long-legged racing pigs to meet demand for the new craze of pig racing. Sergei Spirin, president of the newly formed Federation of Sport Pig Breeders, said the biggest pig racing track was located at Moscow's Crocus-Expo pavilion, but many others were opening up as well. Spirin, who is also a vet, said the pigs had been coached daily for months to get into prime condition for the gruelling races. He said: "These swine are long-legged, lean, nimble, in good sporting form - and craving for victory. "Conditioned and unconditioned reflexes play an important role in coaching....

Wander through the supermarket and you will be inundated with trademarks and logos. They're on everything ... from cereal boxes to laundry detergent to canned cling peaches and the stuff you use to clean countertops -- and you're used to seeing them. But one logo you'll likely see in your produce aisle these days might surprise you. It's NASCAR. That's right, NASCAR-branded produce is now in stores. Distributed by Castellini Group, one of the largest produce distributors in the U.S., the items include potatoes, tomatoes, onions, lemons, limes and oranges. Of course, NASCAR doesn't actually grow the produce. It merely...

LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 1 - Beneath its twin spires, Churchill Downs has completed a sparkling $121 million makeover in time for the 131st running of the Kentucky Derby, America's most famous horse race. But this year's Derby, which will be Saturday, may be best remembered for the plainclothes investigators roaming the dusty barn areas and for testing the horses for illegal performance-enhancing drugs before and after the Run for the Roses. After decades of rumors about "juiced" thoroughbreds and ineffective attempts at regulation, the horse racing industry has acknowledged that it has a drug problem. "It's a very serious problem,...

I'm watching the Opening Ceremony for the Dubai World Cup, which curiously occurs after the fourth race on the program. (The Dubai World Cup is a very rich horse racing program - the richest - held in the United Arab Emirates.) I'm watching via the Internet on a restricted link, but I think this will be shown on Fox Sports at noon eastern time. The thing that prompted me to post was a supposedly traditional dance normally performed by men, but today (tonight in the UAE) performed by women; and performed rather seductively I might add. All of the girls...

BERLIN (AFP) - Seven-time world Formula One champion Michael Schumacher of Germany has donated 10 million dollars to the victims of last week's Asian tsunamis, his manager Willi Weber said during a German telethon. "The dawning of the New Year has not been as joyful for us this year because of the catastrophe in Asia. We sympathise with the victims in their grief," Schumacher said. The death toll from the massive December 26 earthquake and resulting tidal waves around the Indian Ocean neared 146,000 Tuesday.

Racing at the track is a truly unforgettable experience! To pull up to the track entrance with a Van Load of kids (6 of us all together!) and ask for a run card to race, talk about stupid looks! Then to pull into tech inspection with all the Mustangs and Camaros and watch all the kids pile out. The tech inspector will normally not give it a close look until he notices the helmet in the seat and the slicks in the back. When I say I run 12 Second 1/4 miles, they do a double take. "You got a...

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- International Speedway Corp. has paid $100 million to buy land in Staten Island to build a New York City track. The company, which owns or operates 11 of NASCAR's major tracks, hopes to build a $600 million facility on dormant industrial land. Officials said Wednesday it could represent the largest construction project the motorsports giant has undertaken, nearly triple the amount it spent to build tracks in Kansas City, Kan., and the Chicago area. Lesa France Kennedy, president of the family-controlled ISC, said the company has to complete a feasibility study before deciding whether to...

Intro: You need to know that some of the top jockeys are boycotting Churchill Downs because they have just discovered that Churchill Downs will not agree to provide unlimited Medical coverage for jockeys injured while riding at Churchill. With that in mind, this great post appeared on a board that I participate in, in response to this: The jockey's who boycotted Churchill Downs are my kinda of people. Being a union man and union rep I can see where they are coming from. Big companies of any industry do not take action on anything until you finally lay the hammer...
