-- Tom Magliozzi, half of the "Click and Clack" team of brothers who hosted NPR's "Car Talk" radio show, died Monday. He was 77. NPR reported the death Monday afternoon. The cause was complications from Alzheimer's disease, the radio network said. In a statement, his brother Ray remembered a jovial partner. "We can be happy he lived the life he wanted to live; goofing off a lot, talking to you guys every week, and primarily, laughing his ass off," he said.

A massive fire has broken out at the Radio France headquarters building in Paris, causing the evacuation of personnel, according to reports. The fire engulfed the seventh and eight floors of Maison de la radio (Radio House) in the 16 arrondissement of Paris. Several windows exploded due to the extreme heat. Firefighters were called to the scene. Radio programmes of France Inter and France Info were suspended as a necessary safety measure. The fire reportedly hit the area of a ventilation system under works. No injuries were immediately reported. "I hope we can resume our radio programmes as soon as...

Communications is a key element in our everyday lives. If you don’t believe me, try going a whole day with no cell phone, Internet, television, or any other means of communications (COMMS). So it stands to reason that having COMMS, when SHTF, is essential to gaining intelligence (COMINT), the safety and security of your family, keeping informed, and keeping at least one step ahead of anybody with bad intentions. Like any skill, it is essential to practice; that means practicing before SHTF, so that you have the necessary skills. While most of the communications methods discussed in this article are...

Most Americans are familiar with the names of their local radio stations but not with the cumbersome name of the company that owns most of them: Clear Channel Media Holdings Inc. Now, after 42 years, the country’s largest radio broadcaster is switching its name to something it hopes will resonate more with listeners and advertisers: iHeartMedia Inc., a nod to the company’s three-year-old digital radio service, iHeartRadio. Though most of Clear Channel’s revenue still comes from advertising on its terrestrial airwaves — iHeartRadio only accounts for 10% of total listening for the company — Clear Channel has been building the...

Few questioned the role that talk radio played in turning out Republicans to vote for Sheriff Clarke in this month' primary election. But talk radio also played a role in the 6th Congressional District primary. According to Jason Smathers' report in the Fond Du Lac Reporter, 620 WTMJ talk show host and Editor in Chief of RightWisconsin Charlie Sykes may have tipped the scales for Glenn Grothman's narrow victory. "Mark Graul, a GOP operative who runs Arena Strategy Group in Green Bay, said two reasons Leibham narrowly lost to state Sen. Glenn Grothman, R-Campbellsport, were money and talk radio." (SNIP)...

Some oldies fans get their fix from XM radio stations or internet streaming music like Pandora. But since WJAS (1320 AM) was sold and switched from “nostalgia” programming to talk earlier this month, fans have been searching for a new radio station to hear their favorite music. “It was a shock for them to shift to talk shows from music that a lot of people liked,” said Anne Zuza, 70, of Ross. As another ex-WJAS listener emailed: “Is there any other station that plays the classic hits of the '50s, '60s and '70s?” That depends on your interpretation of “classic...

In what Bloomberg calls a “digital push,” Disney announced that it is closing 23 of its 24 terrestrial stations, laying off nearly 200 people in sales and operations. (See the intra-company memo from GM Phil Guerini below.) Disney is shifting its efforts and resources from terrestrial to the broadly-termed “digital” realm, which in this case means program distribution on SiriusXM and online streaming platforms. The company maintains a Radio Disney mobile app. The strategy shift represents what Disney calls “the habits of the consumers we serve.” Inside Radio reports that only 18% of Disney’s radio audience tune in via AM.FM...
