(AP) -- Rangers and others at Crater Lake National Park spent about six hours rescuing a New York man who slid 300 feet into the remains of a volcano that forms the nation's deepest and clearest lake. Authorities describe the man as 27, from New York, and say his injuries were serious. He wasn't identified. Witnesses said he was with friends Monday, went beyond a barrier onto a snow bank at an overlook, fell headfirst and slid partway down the 700-foot wall toward the lake.

Army officials say the soldiers reached the 20,320-foot summit of Mount McKinley in Alaska Friday night, just in time to for the Memorial Day weekend. The Rangers - assigned to 2d Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord - made the climb in honor of the 11 Rangers from their regiment who have died in the line of duty. NHL winger Derek Boogaard has died, the New York Rangers announced in a news release on Friday night. The news was first reported by Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune who said that Boogaard, 28, was found dead at his apartment in Minneapolis on Friday.
