A hip hop artist's visit to a Dallas middle school has sparked controversy. It's not what he said, or what he did, but what students went home with that's drawing concern. National hip hop artist Gorilla Zoe visited Pearl C. Anderson Junior High School on Friday. He was there for a motivational speech but left students with a poster that has some questionable content and left parents wondering why the school allowed it. This poster contained the cover shot for Gorilla Zoe's new album, showing the rapper smoking, drinking and packing a pistol in his pocket. Pearl C. Anderson is...

[video] Here’s a deep philosophical question for you to consider: Is it possible to be a rap artist without being a complete idiot? Kanye West, the simple-minded rapper who’s most famous for saying “George Bush doesn’t care about black people,” has offered up a few more brilliant observations. While taping a program for VH1, West recently expressed opinions on a wide range of people he apparently likes better than Bush. “Can’t we give Chris a break,” he said about girlfriend-beating singer Chris Brown, “…I know I make mistakes in life.” “Michael Jackson, amazing. Michael Phelps, amazing… [...more]

Darwinism as Religion in a Holy War Feb 19, 2009 — It might be expected that media attention on Darwin would be exceptionally high this month because of his bicentennial, but some of it seems downright religious. The adulation he has been receiving is almost embarrassing sometimes. It is only exceeded by the righteous indignation frequently expressed against intelligent design. In any other context, the fighting words of the Darwinians would be described as hate speech. Here are some recent examples: 1. Shrine to Darwin:...

Great to see that we've ushered in a new day in American changieness. Following Rev. Lowrey's inaugural "white will embrace what is right" (or, for my Japanese wife, "yellow doesn't have to be mellow"), we were treated to an excellent demonstration of post-racial politics. OK, it's not "We are the World," but role model Jay-Z manages to capture what all of us are thinking, but just couldn't put to a beat...."you can keep ya Puss, I don't want no more BUSH!" and "No more white lies!" Hey, I was just saying that to my kids the other day!! Thanks Jay-Z!...

Professor Ferenc Szasz argued that so-called rap battles, where two or more performers trade elaborate insults, derive from the ancient Caledonian art of "flyting". According to the theory, Scottish slave owners took the tradition with them to the United States, where it was adopted and developed by slaves, emerging many years later as rap. Professor Szasz is convinced there is a clear link between this tradition for settling scores in Scotland and rap battles, which were famously portrayed in Eminem's 2002 movie 8 Mile. He said: "The Scots have a lengthy tradition of flyting - intense verbal jousting, often laced...

Radio station Galaxy FM has suspended two broadcasters for playing a controversial new song which some claim is offensive. The title of Busta Rhymes' single Arab Money has been branded racist and the rapper is accused of mixing up elements of the Koran. The song has barely been aired in the UK for fear of upsetting listeners. And Galaxy confirmed "a number" of complaints were received when it was played in Birmingham and Yorkshire on Saturday night. Busta Rhymes - real name Trevor Smith - insists he is "biggin' up" Arab culture. But Galaxy's spokesman apologised for any offence caused...

A Swedish hip-hop artist and songwriter has been arrested following a road-rage confrontation on a Hollywood street in which a pedestrian died. Authorities say David Moses Jassy, a 34-year-old musician also known as Dave Monopoly, was to be arraigned today on charges of assault, battery and leaving the scene of a deadly accident. Prosecutors claim that the victim, John Osnes, slapped Jassy's rented sport utility vehicle on Sunday when it crept into his right of way as he crossed the road. Jassy then got out of his car, punched Osnes in the face then kicked him in the head when...

There’s nothing surreptitious about the message of Boston rap trio East Coast Avengers’ new single. In “Kill Bill O’Reilly,” the lyrics call for the Fox News star to “be hanged like Benito Mussolini and otherwise killed.” The song is causing outrage - and not just among admirers of right-wing personality O’Reilly. The lyrics are so extreme that even O’Reilly’s fiercest media enemy, TV pundit Keith Olbermann, has condemned the East Coast Avengers.

Well, I have a headache after listening to the new rap song, “Kill Bill O’Reilly.” How out of date are the rappers who composed this masterpiece? They saw fit to include me in their broadside despite the fact that I quit the show 10 months ago.
