  • The Fiction of 'Truth'

We live in a weary age of fable. The latest Hollywood mythology is entitled "Truth." But the film is actually a fictionalized story about how CBS News super-anchor Dan Rather and his "60 Minutes" producer supposedly were railroaded by corporate and right-wing interests into resigning. In reality, an internal investigation by CBS found that Rather and his "60 Minutes" team -- just weeks before the 2004 election -- had failed to properly vet documents of dubious authenticity asserting that a young George W. Bush had shirked his duty as a Texas Air National Guard pilot. The fabulist movie comes on...

CBS has refused to run advertising for Truth, the film starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford that revisits a painful episode in the network's past involving a discredited 2004 news story on former President George W. Bush's military service record. CBS has denounced the movie, which opens Friday, as a disservice to the public and journalists. Redford plays Dan Rather in Truth, with Blanchett as producer Mary Mapes. Together, they were behind a 60 Minutes II story that questioned Bush's Vietnam War-era commitment to service in the Texas Air National Guard. But CBS apologized for the story after documents used...

The episode known as Rathergate represents one of the great journalistic frauds of our time. The scandal erupted from a 60 Minutes Wednesday segment rushed to air on the evening of September 8, 2004, in time to influence the approaching presidential election pitting George W. Bush against John Kerry, as it was clearly intended to do. The segment consisted of two parts that didnít quite fit together except in their antipathy to Bush. In the first part, based on an interview with the vice chairman of Kerryís national finance committee, Dan Rather essentially claimed that political influence had been brought...

The film ďTruthĒ will be released commercially later this month to retell the Rathergate scandal from the perspective of Mary Mapes. The film is based on Mapesís almost laughable 2005 Rathergate memoir. The left routinely seeks to rewrite even yesterdayís news; events eleven years ago, when Mapes committed her misconduct, have now attained the status of ancient history. John and I therefore sought to reiterate the basic facts of the Rathergate scandal in the Weekly Standard article ďRather shameful.Ē Our article is intended to constitute Rathergate 101. In reality, the story was a bold fabrication about President George W. Bushís long-ago service in the Texas National Guard, intended to damage him in his campaign for reelection against John Kerry. They claim there were far more liberals (i.e. union thugs) than Tea Partiers (claiming the thugs surrounded the smaller Tea Party crowd). But something caught my eye during the report, specifically when they did a pan of the "liberal crowd"...but they pulled a Dan Rather by using video footage from some liberal rally prior to the April 5th Wisconsin Supreme Court election. How do I know...
  • Dan Rather, Still in Denial: I Was Asked to Leave CBS for Telling 'Uncomfortable Truth' About Bush

We're headed toward seven years since Dan Rather disgraced himself by running a story based on phony Texas Air National Guard documents to ruin George W. Bush on behalf of that "war hero" John Kerry. Rather has relentlessly presented himself as a pillar of truth and probity. Rather spoke on Tuesday night at the Newseum in Washington, DC to questions from Nick (Father of George) Clooney. Katy Adams and Nikki Schwab of the Washington Examiner's Yeas & Nays column reported Rather thinks he's the teller of uncomfortable truths, and the people objecting to phony documents are somehow the falsifiers and...

It's becoming increasingly clear that Jared Lee Loughner is mentally unstable. Sarah Palin's bullseye on Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords did not direct Loughner to shoot Giffords point-blank in the head on January 8, 2011. Did the vitriol in political discourse, crosshairs and phrases like "Don't retreat, reload" (by Sarah Palin) or "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun" (by President Obama) influence Loughren's state of mind? Perhaps in an idiosyncratic way, according to Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, chairman of psychiatry at Columbia University. "Political rhetoric provided some of the context for his thinking, the pretext...

Dan Rather: GOPers ĎSeek to Cut Out President Obamaís Heart & Throw His Liver to the Dogsí By Brad Wilmouth Created 11/21/2010 - 12:00pm By Brad Wilmouth | November 21, 2010 | 12:00 On Sundayís syndicated Chris Matthews Show, panel member and former CBS anchor Dan Rather - currently with HDNET - made an over the top metaphor about the Republican Party wanting to "cut out President Obamaís heart and throw his liver to the dogs." The panel was having a discussion of the likelihood of gridlock, with substitute moderator Norah OíDonnell asking, "Isnít there some pressure on the Republicans...

Some people just canít let go and Dan Rather is a case in point. Almost six years after he questioned George Bushís National Guard service Rather is still defending the report that led to his eventual departure from the network. Give it a rest Dan. From TVNewser Rather, of course, famously parted ways with CBS after a story about Former President George W. Bushís service in the National Guard was found to be based on faulty documents. Rather sued CBS over his ouster, and most of the charges have since been dismissed. Still, Rather continues to defend the report to...

Helen Thomas simply longs for the days when reporters and pundits could report spin, lies and opinion as fact and were never held accountable outside of page A-16 retractions. The new mediaís finest moment came when in 2004 CBSís Dan Rather attempted to influence a national election (much like his predecessor Walter Cronkite did with the Vietnam War after the Tet Offensive), but unlike then, now there is a new media filled with grassroots activists who were going to hold the old media accountable and one of those activists on the Conservative Site Free-Republic under the handle ďBuckhead,Ē was able...
  • Surprise: GOP challenger outraises Maurice Hinchey in NY-22 race

Not that Ithaca Journal readers would know it from the reporting. They sniff at the notion that the GOP might make a concerted effort to push Maurice Hinchey out of Congress, then neglect to point out the rather troubling development for an incumbent of having a challenger surpass him in fundraising in an election year: Democratic Rep. Maurice Hinchey, meanwhile, is not a major GOP target in the 22nd Congressional District covering Ithaca and Binghamton and stretching east to Poughkeepsie on the other side of the Hudson River. Yes, yes, nothing to see here, just move along. Or ó perhaps...

Reporting from New York - Dan Rather's protracted legal fight with CBS ended Tuesday when New York state's highest court declined to hear the anchor's motion to reinstate his $70-million lawsuit against his longtime employer. Rather was hoping the court would breathe new life into his suit alleging breach of contract and fraud against CBS that a state appellate court had dismissed in September. But the Court of Appeals denied Rather's motion without comment
