This week, we have Savory, with Fruit! (Heads-up, pugmama!) I've never been a very fancy cook, though I do enjoy making food pretty and presentable and will go to some lengths for that. Otherwise, I'm into 'comfort' foods. But I greatly enjoy having something very different and unusual from time to time; and some of my favorites have been dishes that are savory, but include a sweet element, usually fruit. I once vacationed with friends who came from a restaurant background, and eating with them was always a great experience - always something unexpected and never before encountered. About 25...

Meatballs and spaghetti, with a simple marinara sauce, is one of life's greatest comfort foods. I consider myself a serious cook, and I've been making the dish for years, with a few tweaks along the way. Everyone loves it...never had a complaint. But for such a simple dish, there seems to be a near infinite number of variations and possibilities. Lots of FReepers are into food, so I thought I'd throw it open for discussion (and a brief respite from all things Hillary all the time)

During my years of lurking, I always enjoyed the Thanksgiving Cooking thread; but I missed most of it this year. I've got a ? for the Freepers who like to cook and entertain: What do you take to an office party, where the only warm-up options are microwave and sterno-steam-tray? My crew favors my chicken and dumplings, which work out very well warmed up in a crock pot. But I've done it for years, and it's a little labor-intensive for me this year. I want to do something different, and my other best dishes are 'crusty' things - chicken pot...

Okay, the Russians have invaded Ukraine, Obama is probably playing golf, another few hundred "uninvited guests" have arrived at our Southern border, and Germany and Argentina are gearing up for The World Cup Final. My big concern, however, is finding the BEST recipe for my new 1.5 quart ice cream maker.

The 4th of July three-day weekend starts tomorrow. For many Americans, especially our fellow FReepers.. it'll be a well needed respite from the real world. Many will hit the beach, or a ball game, see a parade, watch fireworks. For a lot of us...it means grilling...cooking meat the way it was intended to be cooked, OUTDOORS..with lots of awesome sides. So, if that's in your plans ( or even if you're just thinking about it) feel free to share ideas, recipes, rubs..

When it comes to comfort food, it’s hard to beat macaroni and cheese, a longtime staple of Southern kitchens with recipes as varied as the cooks who make them. But even in this crowded field, Carrie Morey’s version stands out. Cooked in a cast iron skillet with vermicelli instead of macaroni, Caroline’s Macaroni Pie combines the lightness of a soufflé with the ease of a casserole–which is just the way Morey, founder of Callie’s Charleston Biscuits, likes it. “It’s the first thing I mastered cooking at age nine, and it’s the only macaroni and cheese I’ve ever known,” she says....

What do you plan on eating today? Burgers, Fries, Hot Dogs? Some of us even douse it all with chilli. Oh, and what will you wash it all down with? Here is one to start it off... Beef burger with sweet potato chilli chips Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Toss the chips with the oil, 1 tsp chilli flakes and some seasoning.
