From Denny: OK, I've been hearing about the popularity of "bacon blogs" and wondered "is there anything you can't pair well with bacon?" Answer: not much as "the pig" is quite versatile. I see why the pig has so many devotees. Check out the savory bacon recipes: Bacon Explosion (BBQ), Bacon Pie, Bacon Balls (mini-cheese balls), Bacon Bread, Clams Casino Bacon Explosion This is a calorie monster, weighing in at 5000 calories! Read that as "bring your friends" to this BBQ because it reigns as King of BBQ. Ingredients: 2 pounds thick-cut sliced bacon 1 1/2 pounds Italian sausage, casings...

Eggs! I enjoy a cheese souffle, but I don't always enjoy the work of it. This 'Sturdy Souffle' is adapted from the 1979 edition of the Fanny Farmer Cookbook, and cuts down on the work - no separating or separate beating of eggs. It won't rise as high and light, but doesn't fall as flat as a 'regular' souffle. Sturdy Souffle 4 T. butter (and some to grease the dish) 1/4 cup flour 1 cup hot milk Pinch of salt Pinch of cayenne pepper 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese (plus more to sprinkle the baking dish; or just MORE in...
  • Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats

    06/19/2015 8:10:41 AM PDT · by Altariel · 112 replies
Here are five (mostly) scientific reasons why dogs trump cats. 1. Exercise motivation While dogs demand physical and recreational activity, all cats demand is food and a comfy sofa to sleep on all day. Great job being a role model, Felix! **** 2. Give the elderly a purpose Pets are wonderful stress relievers for people of all ages, but the elderly in particular benefit from owning a dog. **** 3. Sniff Out Cancer Cats have an attuned sense of smell, but they're difficult to train. The top cats also can't match the top dogs nose for nose. **** 4. Smarter...

I don't think there are any strict vegetarians in my current personal circle, but there are always some people with food restrictions whom we have to consider whenever we give or contribute to a big party. I work in an 'ethnically diverse' environment with many people who don't eat 'mainstream', ranging from Jews and Muslims who don't eat pork, to a Hindu who doesn't eat beef OR pork; the occasional vegetarians of varying commitment; and (sigh) one 'raw-foodist'. Many years ago, we invited a bunch of people for lunch two days after Christmas, to use up the leftovers from an enormous holiday dinner party. We had just found a great soup recipe that we thought would be a perfect addition to the leftover casserole. We added a crisp salad with a light dressing, and it was a great meal. The casserole comes from an old edition of 'The Joy of Cooking', and uses leftover turkey. This was also a 'food memory' from a visit with a friend who invited me to lunch after a Thanksgiving. The soup is...

This week, we have Savory, with Fruit! (Heads-up, pugmama!) I've never been a very fancy cook, though I do enjoy making food pretty and presentable and will go to some lengths for that. Otherwise, I'm into 'comfort' foods. But I greatly enjoy having something very different and unusual from time to time; and some of my favorites have been dishes that are savory, but include a sweet element, usually fruit. I once vacationed with friends who came from a restaurant background, and eating with them was always a great experience - always something unexpected and never before encountered. About 25...
  • In search of the BEST MEATBALL: What's your recipe for meatballs and marinara sauce?

    03/16/2015 12:04:27 PM PDT · by ken5050 · 88 replies
    one man's opinion...
Meatballs and spaghetti, with a simple marinara sauce, is one of life's greatest comfort foods. I consider myself a serious cook, and I've been making the dish for years, with a few tweaks along the way. Everyone loves it...never had a complaint. But for such a simple dish, there seems to be a near infinite number of variations and possibilities. Lots of FReepers are into food, so I thought I'd throw it open for discussion (and a brief respite from all things Hillary all the time)

I've got a ? for the Freepers who like to cook and entertain: What do you take to an office party, where the only warm-up options are microwave and sterno-steam-tray? My crew favors my chicken and dumplings, which work out very well warmed up in a crock pot. But I've done it for years, and it's a little labor-intensive for me this year. I want to do something different, and my other best dishes are 'crusty' things - chicken pot...

When it comes to comfort food, it’s hard to beat macaroni and cheese, a longtime staple of Southern kitchens with recipes as varied as the cooks who make them. But even in this crowded field, Carrie Morey’s version stands out. Cooked in a cast iron skillet with vermicelli instead of macaroni, Caroline’s Macaroni Pie combines the lightness of a soufflé with the ease of a casserole–which is just the way Morey, founder of Callie’s Charleston Biscuits, likes it. “It’s the first thing I mastered cooking at age nine, and it’s the only macaroni and cheese I’ve ever known,” she says....

Syrian Rebel Bites Heart of Dead Soldier: Video BEIRUT (Reuters) - A video of a Syrian rebel commander cutting the heart out of a soldier and biting into is emblematic of a civil war that has rapidly descended into sectarian hatred and revenge killings, Human Rights Watch said on Monday. The New York-based group said an amateur video posted on the Internet on Sunday shows Abu Sakkar, a founder of the rebel Farouq Brigade who is well known to journalists as an insurgent from Homs, cutting into the torso of a dead soldier. The video has caused outrage among both...
