A Utah mayor has announced he will seek the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Mitt Romney in the state's 2024 Senate election, becoming the first candidate to pose a challenge to the Republican senator should he attempt to seek re-election. Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs – a Republican who gained notoriety in 2020 for his opposition to mask mandates amid the coronavirus pandemic – said he is looking to protect the country that his children will some day inherit. "I love my children, and I'm worried about the country they will inherit if I sit on the sidelines," Staggs told...

How many of you missed this story? EPA overrides Congress, hands over town to Indian tribesHere's the first paragraph: Have you heard the story of the residents of Riverton, Wyo.? One day they were Wyomingans, the next they were members of the Wind River tribes — after the Environmental Protection Agency declared the town part of the Wind River Indian Reservation, undoing a 1905 law passed by Congress and angering state officials. But here's how I read it: Have you heard the story of the residents of Riverton, Wyo.? One day they were Wyomingans, the next they were members of...

Why is the EPA altering state boundaries in Wyoming - and reversing over 100 years of established law? Well, apparently the city of Riverton now falls under the jurisdiction of the Wind River Indian Reservation. Wyoming Governor Matt Mead warned of the dangers to all Americans of this type of unilateral land redistribution by the EPA: ...My deep concern is about an administrative agency of the federal government altering a state's boundary and going against over 100 years of history and law. "This should be a concern to all citizens because, if the EPA can unilaterally take land away from...

BARKHAMSTED -- Riverton's center is just a quarter-mile smattering of quaint buildings on three streets by the Farmington River. Yet for decades, this tiny village in northern Barkhamsted was a real tourist destination because of the Hitchcock Chair Co., founded here in 1826 by Lambert Hitchcock, whose sturdy painted wooden chairs with gold stenciling became American classics. Hitchcock closed April 26, done in, company officials said, by cheaper products from overseas. Its flagship store in the original riverside factory and the adjacent Lambert house are vacant, their parking lots empty. The shoppers and history buffs no longer visit. Bob Wysocki,...

Wyoming watches to see how Riverton deals with controversial church By Michael Zamora Published in the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle CHEYENNE – The city of Riverton never asked for white supremacist church leader Matt Hale to come knocking on its door. “I think the reaction of a lot of people initially was they were shocked trying to figure out why a group like that was moving to Riverton,” Tim Thorson, executive director of the Riverton Chamber of Commerce, said. “Riverton is not a hateful or hate-friendly community. We’re just a friendly community.” But the Rev. Thomas Kroenke, who heads the state’s Church...

Supremacist group might revive hate-crime debate By Lara Azar Published in the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle CHEYENNE – News reports that a white supremacist group has moved its headquarters to Riverton could revive the ongoing hate-crimes debate among legislators next year. Several bills have been brought forward in the past few years, with none making it very far through the approval process. Wyoming remains one of a handful of states with little hate-crime legislation on the books. Many legislators see it the way Rep. Rodney “Pete” Anderson, R-Pine Bluffs, does: A crime is a crime is a crime. “It’s still a crime...
