The typical rocket launch dumps the same amount of CO2 into the atmosphere as one airliner does in the course of a trans-Atlantic crossing If you’re worried about your ‘carbon footprint’ - a concept foisted on the world in 2004 by British Petroleum to persuade people that their own behaviour, and not giant oil companies like BP, is causing the climate problem -- then you definitely should not sign up for a sub-orbital space flight. Besides, you probably can’t afford it ($250,000 pp). Millions of people can afford it, however, and since the Branson/Bezos ‘space race’ last month tickets for...
  • Firefly’s Alpha rocket lifts off but explodes shortly into first launch

Firefly was attempting to reach orbit, and its Alpha rocket went supersonic moments before the failure, according to the company’s mission control audio. The rocket launched from the SLC-2 complex at Vandenberg Space Force Base. Standing at 95 feet tall, Firefly’s Alpha rocket is designed to launch as much as 1,000 kilograms of payload to low Earth orbit – at a price of $15 million per launch. This puts Firefly in the “medium-lift” category of rockets, pitting it against several other companies including Richard Branson’s Virgin Orbit, ABL Space and Relativity Space.

Northrop Grumman’s Antares rocket is scheduled to lift off at 5:56 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, Aug. 10, as part of the company’s 16th mission to deliver supplies, equipment and NASA science investigations to the International Space Station, NASA announced. As long as skies are clear, the launch may be visible to people across the Mid-Atlantic region and possibly other parts of the eastern United States... Live coverage of the mission countdown is scheduled to begin at about 1 p.m. Tuesday on the Wallops IBM video site. Launch coverage on NASA TV is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

So, tomorrow at 9:00am EDT, the Blue Origin New Sheppard is planned to launch into the West Texas skies, carrying its first human passengers to the edge of space. The question is: will the world's richest man, Jeff Besos, pull off this stunt as fellow billionaire Sir Richard Branson did a few days ago? He's supposed to go higher than Branson did, not to mention that he'll be accompanied by both the world's oldest (82) and youngest (18) people to go into space.

Pardon the indulgence, but this type of thing never gets old watching it still amazes me...landing a rocket back on land is routine to them. SpaceX has released some new video of their most recent launch and landing of the First Stage back on land, I have not seen these angles before, but it's pretty awesome.

What is that again? A strange and puzzling spiral in the skies captured by hundreds of skywatchers across the Pacific Ocean. People across the south Pacific islands, including New Caledonia, Tokelau, Samoa and Fiji, all reported spotting the same spiral phenomenon in the skies on Friday night, June 18. The spectacular spiral formation baffled viewers, who recorded video and photographs of it and took to social media to share what they saw. This is very similar to what occurred in Norway a few years back… What do you think? Footage posted on social media shows the spiral shape expanding in...
  • NASA Wallops Rocket Launch Now Set For Tuesday Night

The Sunday and Monday launches were postponed due to “upper level winds not being within the limits for a safe launch.” The original launch was planned for last Friday, but has been moved each night due to the weather. The goal of the mission is to study how energy and momentum is transported between regions of space that are connected magnetically. This study will help scientists better understand things like Auroras and how they are formed and their movement from place to place.

Chinese state media have reported that remnants of China's biggest rocket landed in the Indian Ocean on Sunday. That puts an end to days of speculation over where the debris would hit, and anxiety of it possibly landing on human-populated areas. CCTV said that most of the rocket was burnt up as it re-entered the Earth's atmosphere, before reportedly landing west of the Maldives. The U.S. Space command confirmed its re-entry over the Arabian Peninsula, though it said it was unclear if the debris fell on land or water. It also said it would not be releasing the exact site...

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson criticized China for creating unnecessary risks as an uncontrolled core segment of its biggest rocket reentered Earth’s atmosphere and mostly burned up over the Maldives before landing in the Indian Ocean on May 9. “It is clear that China is failing to meet responsible standards regarding their space debris,” the former senator said in a statement.

An "out of control" Chinese rocket has landed in the Indian Ocean, China says. The rocket, called Long March 5B, was launched from Wenchang Space Launch Centre on 29 April to carry Tianhe - the first module of China's future space station - into orbit. It re-entered the atmosphere at 3.24am UK time, with the bulk of its components destroyed at that point, according to Chinese state media. The point of impact was somewhere southwest of India and Sri Lanka, they added. While the timing of the landing had been pinpointed quite closely, the possible landing site had been unclear...

A massive Chinese rocket is expected to make an uncontrolled re-entry to Earth this week — and experts have no clue yet where its remnants will land. The roughly 100-foot-tall core of the Long March 5B rocket launched the 22.5-ton “Heavenly Harmony” unmanned Tianhe space station module from Wenchang in Hainan province on Thursday, the Guardian reported. Tianhe soon separated from the launcher and entered its planned initial orbit — but the core stage is likely to make an uncontrolled re-entry amid the thickening atmosphere, SpaceNews reported. “It’s potentially not good,” Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Astrophysics Center at...

The U.S. Space Command is tracking uncontrolled debris from a Chinese rocket that sent part of a planned space station into orbit last week, the White House said on May 5. The debris comes from the Long March 5B rocket launched on April 29 to deliver a new 22.5-tonne module for China’s Tianhe space station. The debris has since reached orbital velocity, meaning it is circling the planet instead of falling back to Earth within a predetermined area as usually happens with the debris from U.S. launches.

(© Elvis Popovic/CGS Society) PHYSICS In a Comprehensive Test, The 'Impossible' EM Drive Has Failed to Produce Thrust… Again PAUL M. SUTTER, UNIVERSE TODAY5 APRIL 2021 The EM Drive is a hypothetical rocket that proponents claim can generate thrust with no exhaust. This would violate all known physics. In 2016, a team at NASA's Eagleworks lab claimed to measure thrust from an EM Drive device, the news of which caused quite a stir. The latest attempt to replicate the shocking results has resulted in a simple answer: the Eagleworks measurement was from heating of the engine mount, not any new...
  • 40 YEARS AGO: CHARLES ROCKET FIRED AFTER DROPPING F-BOMB ON ‘SNL’

In the right context, cursing on the job can be cathartic. But in the wrong setting, it can stain a career — like in the infamous case of Charles Rocket, who was fired from Saturday Night Live soon after dropping an F-bomb during an episode on Feb. 21, 1981. This wasn't the dismissal of a frivolous bit player — Rocket had been singled out as a potential breakout star in the 1980-81 season, a polarizing and bizarre period in SNL history. The show's original executive producer, Lorne Michaels, left the sketch series with the intent of taking a year off...
  • Question for 'ROCKETHEAD' FReepers regarding SpaceX's Starship SN8 and SN9 [VANITY]

One common factor of the last two test flights of SpaceX's SN8 and SN9 both resulting in crash landings is really bugging me..Unlike the Falcon boosters' successful return to Earth after going vertical LONG BEFORE LANDING, the 'pitch to vertical' maneuver of the Starship rockets seems to occur TOO LATE IN THE DESCENT and just mere seconds before landing.. WHY IS THIS?My main question is about the latent pitch to vertical before landing. Why does it wait so long to do this? Does it have to do with the tremendous weight involved that is different than the Falcon booster?
