The Big Apple has gotten smaller again. Nearly 78,000 residents fled New York City last year, shrinking its population down to 8.26 million people, according to the latest census estimates released on Thursday and first reported by the New York Times. In 2022, more than 126,000 New Yorkers moved out of the city. Between April 2020 and July 2023, which coincided with the height of the COVID pandemic, the city experienced a mass exodus of 550,000 residents, shrinking its population by more than 6%.

The guy gets more pathetic with every poll that shows him shrinking. The latest strategy to garner Republican support is for the Florida governor to appear on MSNBC “Morning Joe” to participate in the orange man bad conversation. The devolution of DeSantis is actually quite funny; it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy of visible desperation. We all knew this was going to happen, but it’s still pathetic to watch it play out in real time. In the big picture, the arc of this collapsing narrative was very predictable, because Ron DeSantis winning the 2024 GOP nomination is not the goal of the...
  • Russia expelled from International Civil Aviation Organization

Russia loses even more prominence in the sky. The International Civil Aviation Organization, a UN agency dedicated to studying the problems of the sector as well as promoting unique regulations and standards for world aeronautics, resolved yesterday to expel Russia from its governing body. The decision was made yesterday, during one of the days of its General Assembly that is being held in Montreal, Canada. The invasion of Ukraine and the collateral effects of this action have been the compelling arguments for a decision unprecedented since the founding of ICAO in 1944. Russia needed a minimum of 86 votes to...

NPR painted a more optimistic perspective of the economic report released early Thursday morning. The Commerce Department announced that the United States economy shrank by 1.4% in the first quarter of 2022. This clashed with previous expectations that the economy would expand by 1.1% and marked the worst quarter growth in two years since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

For President in 2020, George Will comes out for Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), the lefty who's progressive but not crazy. Personally, Bennet's announcement was the first I've ever heard of the guy, and it's jarring that Will, for no other apparent reason than Trump animus, is now beating drums for Democrats. He was once well thought of by Republicans. Will has revealed himself to be another small-minded little man of big words. That's what the Left always loved about him. Like Adlai Stevenson, he sounded smart and well read and went to the best schools and conducted himself with appropriate...

President Trump signed a new executive order Monday instructing federal government agencies to cut duplicative and unnecessary programs across the board. The order is intended to "improve the efficiency, effectiveness and accountability of the executive branch." “This order requires a thorough examination of every executive department and agency to see where money is being wasted, how services can be improved and whether programs are truly serving American citizens,” Trump said at the White House. “Based on this input, we will develop a detailed plan to make the federal government work better, reorganizing, consolidating and eliminating where necessary. In other words,...

Predictions of doom for the Republican Party are all the rage in the media, but the real story of this election cycle (so far) is the collapse of Democrat turnout. Some of this is no doubt due to the difficulty in generating enthusiasm after more than 7 years of foreign policy disasters and historically low economic growth under Obama. Another factor is the sheer unappealing nature of Hillary Clinton. Bernie Sanders is the sole person in the party capable of generating excitement, playing to the far left wing and youth after freebies (and so badly educated by the leftist educational...

NEW YORK, March 4 (Reuters) - NASCAR calls it "right-sizing" but others see it as sign that something is terribly wrong with America's most popular motor sport as thousands of seats are being removed from tracks across the United States. The sprawling Charlotte Motor Speedway, which once drew a crowd of 167,000, is removing 41,000 seats while tracks in Dover and Atlanta will chop capacity by at least 17,000. "Right-sizing is the term," NASCAR's Chief Operating Officer Brent Dewar told Reuters after addressing the Sport Business Summit in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday. "It is what you are seeing in all...

In his weekly radio address, President Obama explained the budget he'll rollout next week, and said, "the truth is, our deficits are already shrinking." Barack Obama delivers inaugural address 1-20-09 090120-A-8725H-285 "My budget will reduce our deficits not with aimless, reckless spending cuts that hurt students and seniors and middle-class families – but through the balanced approach that the American people prefer, and the investments that a growing economy demands," said Obama. "Now, the truth is, our deficits are already shrinking. That’s a fact. I’ve already signed more than $2.5 trillion in deficit reduction into law, and my budget will...

Two videos distill the meaning of a campaign, and a presidency. ‘We’re going to have that person arrested and prosecuted that did the video,” said Hillary Clinton. No, not the person who made the video saying that voting for Barack Obama is like losing your virginity to a really cool guy. I’ll get to that in a moment. But Secretary Clinton was talking about the fellow who made the supposedly Islamophobic video that supposedly set off the sacking of the Benghazi consulate. And, indeed, she did “have that person arrested.” By happy coincidence, his bail hearing has been set for...

Republican Mitt Romney is accusing President Barack Obama of engaging in "petty attacks and silly word games" just 18 days before the election. Romney on Friday rallied a raucous crowd in Daytona Beach, Fla., saying Obama was running a small campaign. Earlier in the day, Obama joked that a case of "Romnesia" was preventing Romney from remembering his own policy positions. The Republican also accused Obama of having no second-term agenda. He dubbed Obama's bid, quote, "the incredible shrinking campaign." Romney campaigned with running mate Paul Ryan. A colorful crowd of thousands greeted them — Daytona Beach is hosting its...

From the mighty polar bear to the tiny house sparrow, many of Earth's species appear to be shrinking in size, a new study reports. And the authors think it's probably due to global warming, a little like wool sweaters that shrink when washed in hot water. But other experts say that conclusion goes too far, blaming global warming for what may be natural changes. ... The shrinking victims, according to the study, include cotton, corn, strawberries, bay scallops, shrimp, crayfish, carp, Atlantic salmon, herring, frogs, toads, iguanas, hooded robins, red-billed gulls, California squirrels, lynx and wood rats. Two years ago,...

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere are unexpectedly shrinking and cooling due to lower ultraviolet radiation from the sun, US scientists said Thursday. The sun's energy output dropped to unusually low levels from 2007 to 2009, a significantly long spell with virtually no sunspots or solar storms, according to scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. During that period, the thermosphere, whose altitude ranges from about 55 to 300 miles (90 to 500 kilometers), shrank and contracted from the sharp drop in ultraviolet radiation, said the study published in the American Geophysical Union's...

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The Man in the Moon has become the latest victim of contraction in the housing market. Astronomers reporting on Thursday in the US journal Science said they had found previous undetected landforms which indicate that Earth's satellite has been shrinking... albeit by only a tiny amount. The intriguing features, called lobate scarps, are faults created when the Moon's once-molten interior began to cool, causing the lunar surface to contract and then crinkle, they said. Relative to the Moon's age, estimated at around 4.5 billion years, the contraction is recent, occurring less than a billion years ago, and...

The focus of Pope Benedict’s reign has been to draw sharp boundaries that strictly define what it means to be a Catholic, what it means to be a priest, and how the Church should reconfigure itself in order to exile members who are not true believers. For Benedict, the church must be an orthodox community, which means that it will be a smaller community. But as we have seen in the Vatican’s unsure handling of the controversy around Bishop Richard Williamson, the global trends that the Pope wants to resist are going to pose serious challenges to a more orthodox...

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A massive bright reddish star in the Orion constellation has mysteriously shrunk by over 15 percent in the last 15 years and astronomers have not yet determined why, according to a study released Tuesday. Betelgeuse, considered a supergiant star, is so large that it would reach to Jupiter's orbit in our solar system. But at a radius of about five astronomical units, the star has shrunk in size since 1993 by a distance equivalent to Venus's orbit. "To see this change is very striking," University of California, Berkley professor Charles Townes, who whon the 1964 Nobel Prize...

WASHINGTON - The first pictures from the unseen side of Mercury reveal the wrinkles of a shrinking, aging planet with scars from volcanic eruptions and a birthmark shaped like a spider. Some of the 1,213 photos taken by NASA's Messenger probe and unveiled Wednesday help support the case that ancient volcanoes dot Mercury and that it is shrinking as it gets older, forming wrinkle-like ridges. But other images are surprising and puzzling. The spidery shape captured in a photo is "unlike anything we've seen anywhere in the solar system," said mission chief scientist Sean Solomon of the Carnegie Institution of...
  • Immigrants Save US Cities From Shrinking

Immigrants save US cities from shrinking Staff and agencies Thursday April 5, 2007 Guardian Unlimited (UK) Parts of the metropolitan US are relying on hundreds of thousands of foreign immigrants to maintain population levels as native-born Americans move elsewhere, according to figures released today. New York would lose around 100,000 residents a year if overseas immigrants were not filling the void, the census bureau figures for 2000 to 2006 show. Los Angeles and Boston would also shrink without immigrants, threatening their economies and property markets. "A lot of cities rely on immigration to prop up their housing market and economies,"...

With the robust economy, tax revenues are pouring in. But rising costs lie ahead. Despite the ongoing costs of US military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, the outlook for the federal budget has grown substantially brighter. Tax revenues are rising much faster than spending, according to Treasury Department numbers released last week. The recent trend is strong enough that, were it to continue, the budget could move into surplus in barely a year, one economist calculates. Already, the federal deficit is shrinking toward about half the size that it has averaged since 1970 ...

Shrinking telomeres linked to heart disease 00:01 12 January 2007 NewScientist.com news service Michael Day The gradual erosion of telomeres – the strands of DNA that cap our chromosomes and wear away with each cell division – may play a pivotal role in heart disease. People who go on to have heart attacks have much shorter telomeres than those who remain healthy, a major new study has shown. Researchers from Leicester and Glasgow Universities in the UK took blood samples from 484 middle-aged men with moderately raised cholesterol, plus 1058 control subjects. They compared the telomere lengths in their white...
