We've heard a lot recently about the I Promise School that LeBron James is helping to start in Akron, Ohio, and, in theory, it seems like a good idea: Gather up 240 at-risk students into a school that, in addition to academics, provides "wraparound" services like free breakfast and lunch and an extended school day and school year to keep kids off the streets. The Akron Beacon Journal reports some staggering dollar amounts being poured into the school that will enroll 240 kids. The school, which is public and part of Akron Public Schools, is costing the district nearly $2.9...

The number of Russians residing and working in the Czech Republic has been steadily growing in recent years. Today Russians are the fourth strongest foreign minority in the country, after Vietnamese, Slovak and Ukrainian nationals. In the last decade their number rose from 23,000 to 37,000. For young Russians, Prague is an attractive city free of the constraints of the Putin regime, and a good place for business and entertainment. The language barrier is easily surmountable due to both nations speaking a Slavic language. However there is one barrier that is harder to cross and that is the stigma of...

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Delilah Cassidy's tweet thread was building to a climactic ending. At 1:37 p.m. on May 30, Cassidy, a law student at Arizona State University, began tweeting about her experience at an airport gate en route to Phoenix from a European trip. By now, the story is internet lore. But that afternoon, she was unveiling it to the digital world tweet by tweet. She was about to board an American Airlines flight when the gate agent told her she needed to pay $50 to bring her carry-on with her. If she didn't want to pay, the agent said,...

Dear NFL, I have been a lifelong fan since the age of 10 – That’s more than 50 years…. I have followed many players, and only two teams in my life. The players I have followed have always been the “stand up for the flag” kind of players, I mean it just figures because I was drawn to serve my country – Not because I had to, or because it was my only option. I chose to serve out of nothing more than the pure love of my country. After serving onboard ships for nine years and three years with...

Democratic Socialism is a Scam When I attended a rally with my family in Little Havana for then-Senator Barack Obama in 2007, our old neighborhood greeted both us and the future 44th president as if we were traitors. Older, conservative protestors yelled “Comunistas!” at us from across the Miami-Dade County Auditorium. We brushed off the attacks because we knew they came from understandably traumatized exiles and, to paraphrase the late Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, as Cuban Americans, we know socialism when we see it. Obama was no socialist. In fact, his message resonated with us, in part, because of...

Jack Whitehall has faced a backlash over reports that he has been cast as Disney’s first openly gay character. The British comedian has reportedly landed himself a role in forthcoming action adventure The Jungle Cruise, but Disney fans are questioning why a straight actor has been cast instead of a gay actor. According to reports, he will star alongside Emily Blunt and The Rock in what has been described as a “turning point” in Disney’s colourful history. The film is supposedly set in the 19th century, where LGBTQ+ rights were non-existent. @raunanand Why is Jack Whitehall (Jack Whitehall!) played Disney's...

These past years I have sat on the sidelines very quietly enjoying life with family and friends, observing from a distance. I know the new politicians of the 21st century don’t need my advice. But friends recently suggested I sit down with both gubernatorial candidates to discuss the concerns I outlined above. I agreed to but didn’t expect anyone to call. I never heard from Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham. I did receive a call from Congressman Steve Pearce. I was surprised how open he was and how we agreed on about 80 percent of the issues that plague New Mexico....

KIRKWOOD, N.Y. - New York State officials are warning of an alarming increase in reckless driving and crashes in highway work zones this year. The Department of Transportation and State Police held a news conference Wednesday at the Interstate 81 Welcome Center in Kirkwood to spread the message that drivers need to be more careful and considerate when traveling through construction zones. In particular, they want drivers to put down their phones and slow down. The DOT brought a damaged attenuator for a visual example. It was crushed earlier this year along Interstate 87 near Albany. An attenuator is a...

Remember those striped gym socks that used to be all the rage from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s? I can't believe that I used to wear those socks but I did and so did a lot of other people. Girls didn't have to wear them. They always got to go sockless...if they wanted. But some of them wore those socks too. Don't know why. But boys, not so lucky. We had to wear these...

Speaking to a foreign journalist is usually a stressful endeavor for a Uighur in China. Uighurs belong to a Muslim ethnic minority and speak a language closer to Turkish than Chinese. These differences from China's dominant ethnicity, the Han, have been at the root of a tense and sometimes violent relationship between Uighurs and China's government. But there's another difference many Uighurs possess that the rest of China is attracted to: their appearance. With their looks, they can easily flow through cultures," says Liu. "They can play multiple roles. If you need to cast a foreigner in a movie, they...

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn attended a pedophilia-themed party, according to photographs surfacing online. The Daily Caller’s Ian Miles Cheong appears to have been the first to find and publish the photos, seen below. Ian Miles Cheong ✔ @stillgray I wish I never defended James Gunn. The now-disgraced Gunn was fired by the Walt Disney Co. last month after countless “jokes” about child rape were dug up on his Twitter account.

9.) Be happy to see him. Free him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him. Listen to him. 10.) You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first — remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours. 11.) Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you. Instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his very real need to...

It sounds like some audience members are taking the title Straight White Men far too literally. Non-binary performer and activist Kate Bornstein stars as Person in Charge 1 in Young Jean Lee’s privilege-checking Broadway satire. Bornstein was interrupted earlier this week by a heckler while delivering the opening monologue alongside fellow trans docent Ty Defoe. I’m deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support in response to an attempted shaming of me that happened during a performance of Young Jean Lee’s “Straight White Men” on Broadway last night. It’s true what people are saying: a woman, in response to...

he NFL’s ongoing national anthem controversy has made its way into a third season with the story taking center stage during this week’s preseason openers. While a handful of players conducted social justice protests during the anthem on Thursday’s loaded slate of games, Marshawn Lynch, one of the NFL’s most outspoken players, took a seat on the bench prior to the anthem ahead of Friday’s game between the Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions.

If you’ve managed to make it this far in life without quite figuring out what demographic boxes to tick on the Census form, a recent working paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research might have some clues for you. According to the Washington Post, University of Chicago economists Marianne Bertrand and Emir Kamenica “taught machines to guess a person’s income, political ideology, race, education, and gender based on either their media habits, their consumer behavior, their social and political beliefs, and even how they spent their time.” The results are, at times, surprisingly granular and seemingly nonsensical: Owning...
