The House voted Thursday to make it easier for states to deny federal family-planning funds to groups such as Planned Parenthood that also perform abortions. A rule imposed by the Obama administration says that states cannot deny funding to clinics for reasons unrelated to their ability to provide basic family planning services. Federal dollars cannot be used to pay for abortions, except in restricted circumstances. Tennessee Rep. Diane Black and other Republicans said the rule, finalized in December, unfairly restricts how states can spend federal family-planning funds. …

When it’s Valentine’s Day and the Reddit thread, “Find someone to look at you the way Ivanka Trump looks at Justin Trudeau” pops up, who can resist clicking? But the flurry of posts on the images of the president’s daughter looking at the Canadian prime minister that followed made me feel suckered, with many of them implying there was something sordid and steamy going on. The source of all this fun was a roundtable discussion on women in the workforce that Ivanka had helped organize. Media coverage has described her as giving Trudeau “the golden look,” and describing her as...
  • The Execution of Louis XVI, 1793

    02/16/2017 10:02:38 AM PST · by Jan_Sobieski · 31 replies
Louis XVI, king of France, arrived in the wrong historical place at the wrong time and soon found himself overwhelmed by events beyond his control. Ascending the throne in 1774, Louis inherited a realm driven nearly bankrupt through the opulence of his predecessors Louis XIV and XV. After donning the crown, things only got worse. The economy spiraled downward (unemployment in Paris in 1788 is estimated at 50%), crops failed, the price of bread and other food soared. [...] In 1788, Louis was forced to reinstate France's National Assembly (the Estates-General) which quickly curtailed the king's powers. In July of...

  • Blowin’ in the Wind: Trumpism and Traditional Islam in America

How will the Traditional Islam movement in America respond to the Trump presidency? Will it focus on finding allies on the right and building a conservative moral majority that is Muslim friendly? Or will it focus on protecting civil liberties by allying with the left? How will it position itself with respect to rival movements like the Salafis and the Brotherhood-heritage groups — as their theological critic or their civil liberties ally when these rivals are discriminated against or have their rights taken away? Such choices facing Muslims are hardly unique to America and exist elsewhere.

A new report claims that Melania is living Donald’s dream, according to the viewpoint of Phillip Bloch, a friend and stylist to the Trump Family. Along with Bloch’s claims about Melania being unhappy, another Trump Family source claimed that Mrs. Trump is “miserable” about how her life turned out as the wife of a president. “Melania is unhappy with how her life ended up.” The publication points to many recent events that claim to be almost too much to bear for Melania, who is a “deeply private” person. As Melania spends most of her time at Trump Tower in New...

Others fared even worse. As ISIS took over the town bakery, they converted it into a shop of horror, they rounded up the six bakers working there and executed them in their own ovens. When they began gathering Christian children at the bakery, some local soldiers attempted to rescue the kids. To discourage the soldiers, the terrorists began throwing children off nearby balconies. The horrifying tactic worked and allowed the terrorists to murder 250 kids in the bakery’s dough machine.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson interviewed the Sierra Club’s Executive Director, Michael Brune, on Tucker Carlson Tonight, Feb 2, 2017. Carlson, a former Sierra Club member himself, dove right into asking Brune the tough questions. Puzzled by some of the Sierra Club’s recent position statements on such varied topics as President Trump’s border wall, the women’s march, abortion, and transgender bathrooms, Carlson asked Mr. Brune why the Sierra Club was veering away from protecting the environment to taking positions on the unrelated issues. For those who still naively believe that the Sierra Club is focused on protecting the environment, Brune’s...

“America wasn’t founded on one homogeneous moral view. We have competing moral views.” Democrat Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia spoke these words Monday to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform as he defended what he sees as the right to kill yourself — and do so in collaboration with a licensed physician working with the imprimatur of the state. The city council of the District of Columbia enacted the law in question in December. It authorizes doctors to prescribe what it politely calls a “covered medication” specifically “for the purpose of ending a person’s life.” In plain English,...

A photo of Ivanka Trump casting what appears to be a meaningful gaze at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has prompted fevered speculation on social media over what might have been going through Ms Trump's mind. The photo was taken on Monday during a roundtable discussion about women in the workforce, for which Ivanka "helped recruit participants and set the agenda", as AP reports. During Mr Trudeau's visit to the White House Canada and the US announced a joint task force to help women in the workplace, looking at issues such as childcare and maternity leave. However, with a level...

Hundreds of parents across the country have called on President Donald Trump to embrace Obama-era protections for transgender students that allow them use to school bathrooms in accord with their gender identity. In a letter sent to the president by the Human Rights Campaign late Tuesday, more than 780 parents stressed that “all students deserve equal access to a safe, welcoming school and a high quality education no matter who they are.” The call follows a decision by the Trump administration last week to abandon a defense of the guidelines that had been issued by the Obama administration. A court...
