  • 'I thought I could be with her forever': 'Fictosexual man' who married a HOLOGRAM can no longer speak with his wife after her software expires

    05/02/2022 2:04:03 PM PDT · by algore · 90 replies
The idea of marrying a hologram may sound like the plot of the latest episode of Black Mirror. But it became a reality in 2018, when a 'fictosexual' man married a virtual reality hologram during a ceremony in Tokyo. Akihiko Kondo, 35, spent ¥2 million (£12,222) on a formal ceremony at a Tokyo hall to Hatsune Miku, an animated 16-year-old hologram with saucer eyes and lengthy aquamarine pigtails. But despite thinking he could 'be with her forever', Mr Kondo has been left devastated, after the expiration of her software meant he could no longer speak to his wife. What has...

Remember when BMW wanted to charge drivers to use Apple CarPlay? How about the subscription required for the Mercedes EQS's rear-wheel steering functionality in Europe? It turns out that luxury marques aren't the only ones looking to cash in on that sweet, sweet software as a service cash: Toyota has been testing the waters by making the remote start functionality on your proximity key fob part of a larger connected services subscription.Yes, it appears the pay-to-play ethos that's spreading around the industry has reached the world's largest automaker. A Toyota spokesperson confirmed to The Drive that if a 2018 or...

...The cars — equipped with technology and a human driver in case of emergencies — appear completely baffled as they take in the street and make a multi-point turn to get out of the dead end, CBS San Francisco reported. Not long after one car is gone, another one shows up and does the same thing. And it never really stops, according to the street's residents.... ...The company was originally Google's self-driving car project before becoming a separate subsidiary of the tech giant's parent, Alphabet. It launched a ride-hailing program with its self-driving vehicles in San Francisco for "Trusted Testers"...

Automated resume-scanning software that is inflexibly configured and overlooks potentially suitable workers is a major factor contributing to a “broken” hiring system in the United States, according to a new report from Harvard Business School (HBR). The HBR report (pdf), released Sept. 4, provides insight into America’s labor market dynamics, including the widely reported mismatch between the more than 10 million job openings—a record high—and the more than 8.4 million unemployed actively looking for work. Business owners have been complaining about not being able to find enough workers and having to raise pay to attract new hires. At the same...

The hitmen came for Cecilio Pineda Birto as he swung in a hammock at a carwash, waiting for his pickup to be cleaned. The 38-year-old freelance reporter was shot dead ... A few hours earlier, Pineda had in a broadcast on Facebook Live accused state police and local politicians of colluding with a violent local capo known as El Tequilero. In previous weeks, Pineda had received a string of anonymous death threats. At about the same time, his mobile phone number was selected as a possible target for surveillance by a Mexican client of the spyware company NSO Group. A...

It is the name for perhaps the most powerful piece of spyware ever developed – certainly by a private company. Once it has wormed its way on to your phone, without you noticing, it can turn it into a 24-hour surveillance device. It can copy messages you send or receive, harvest your photos and record your calls. It might secretly film you through your phone’s camera, or activate the microphone to record your conversations. It can potentially pinpoint where you are, where you’ve been, and who you’ve met. Pegasus is the hacking software – or spyware – that is developed,...

It’s the programming equivalent of the circle of life: programming languages are created, gain popularity, hit their peak, and slowly degrade until nobody uses them anymore. With some languages, this process is fairly rapid, especially if the language in question never sees much adoption; others are decades old and still going strong. For developers, knowing which languages will fade is a crucial issue: It’s hard to earn money off programming in a language that nobody really uses anymore. Here are five languages that won’t disappear tomorrow, but the long-term trends definitely don’t look good.R In the TIOBE Index, R has tumbled...

  • One-Third of Basecamp Employees Quit After Founders Ask Them To Focus On Work, Not Wokeness, At Work

Company excised wokeness from workplace after employees reportedly demanded "internal reckoning" over list of funny names that they, themselves, had helped create. Their invocation of "genocide," one exec said, made rational discussion impossible. About one-third of employees at software company Basecamp quit days after bosses told them to keep ideology out of the workplace and focus on the company’s actual business. “We make project management, team communication, and email software,” CEO Jason Fried wrote April 26. We don’t have to solve deep social problems, chime in publicly whenever the world requests our opinion on the major issues of the day,...

There was a time not too long ago when the smart folks in Big Pharma were proud that they had developed technology through mRNA treatments that could change the structure of our DNA and even our genome. This was once heralded as breakthrough science and they boldly compared what they were doing to “software updates” we have on our computers and mobile devices.Watch the show on Locals or listen to it on Apple Podcasts:That was then. Today, that narrative has been obliterated, not because anything has changed with the treatments but because its introduction into “vaccine” research forced a strategic...

The venerable Hubble Space Telescope is recovering from a glitch that halted its science operations over the weekend, according to NASA. The telescope entered "safe mode" unexpectedly on Sunday morning (March 7), stalling the observatory's science observations due to an apparent software glitch. Science operations resumed late Thursday (March 11). While Hubble is partially back to work, NASA is still troubleshooting one instrument on the 30-year-old telescope, according to a statement released on Friday (Mar. 12). The WFC3 issue was an "unexpected error," according to NASA, that occurred when the telescope was transitioning from safe mode into pre-science after the...

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the surveillance state has utilized technology derived from Silicon Valley, such as facial recognition algorithms, to enhance society’s control. Authoritarian regimes and unscrupulous corporations are leveraging these technologies to track citizens, stalk criminals, and monitor employees, but what if this technology, rapidly advancing in the last couple of years, can determine a person’s political views? Imagine this; obviously, the Washington Metropolitan Area is lined with surveillance cameras, with some cameras that may already be employing facial recognition algorithms. Hypothetically speaking, what if these cameras could recognize an angry mob and accurately (to some...

Windows not-so-much, but under WinXP, the versions of Firefox and Chrome I can run are pretty ancient and I either get hit by tons of ads or it gives me a time error and won't even let me in. So I have an older CD which is Knoppix 5.1 and I am trying to configure it to talk to my modem. If you have had experience with this and have hints/tips, please let me know! TIA!
