Wife killed Ga. soldier for insurance, feds say By Jan Skutch Morris News Service March 5, 2014 SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The wife of a slain Fort Stewart soldier schemed with her brother to kill her husband in exchange for a $160,000 insurance policy payout, a federal prosecutor said Tuesday. Lillie Eubank, 39, told investigators she arranged to have her brother, Carl Evan “Cowboy” Swain, travel from Alabama to Savannah, bought a T-ball bat and selected the site for the attack at a recreation park on Fort Stewart, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron Heaps Ippolito said. The victim, Army Spc. John Joseph...

Like most 8-year-olds, Myles Eckert was already dreaming up ways he could spend a $20 bill he had just discovered laying in a Cracker Barrel parking lot earlier this month. “I kind of wanted to get a video game, but then I decided not to,” the child recounted to CBS News. That’s because Eckert saw Lt. Col. Frank Dailey enter the restaurant. The man in uniform changed his mind. Why? “Because he was a soldier, and soldiers remind me of my dad,” Eckert explained to CBS. So, instead of purchasing something for himself, Eckert did something very different on Feb....

I first caught wind of a thread about "the use of a soldier as a prop" less than an hour ago; it's amazing how little interest it's generated, aside from the ad hominem attacks against those that saw it less about 'honoring' SFC Remsburg, than 'using' him. Late to rise & without coffee, it was easier than normal to not react and I took a devil's advocate stance, looking for fact, as I did not watch SOTU. Where to go first? Web search came up with little; I went to DU and found this thread: Title: F**K (edited)He stood that...

Peterborough’s David Jeffrey Dodd said he is a retired member of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, haunted by the scenes of his overseas experiences when his platoon was bombed and a female soldier died in his arms. “She was an incredible Soldier. I lost 4 good soldiers and she was one!,” Dodd posted on the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Association Facebook page Sunday. “I’m coming into a hard time of year (feb sucks bc that’s when it happened)…. I can’t sleep most nights because I see s--t in my dreams.” It would be...

A Different Christmas Poem The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light, I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my chest, My daughter beside me, angelic in rest. Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white, Transforming the yard to a winter delight. The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep, Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In perfect contentment, or so it would seem, So slumbered I, perhaps I started to...

“Like, I’m just giving of my body on the stage; I’m putting my life at risk, literally!” “When I think about when I’m on the ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothing,’ and ‘Coldest Winter’ moment, like that mountain goes really, really high. And if I slipped… You never know. And I think about it. I think about my family and I’m like, wow, this is like being a police officer or something, in war or something.”

The New York Times has apologized for the picture it chose to go along with an article it published about last week’s brutal murder of IDF soldier Eden Atias. Rather than showing a photo of the soldier, the article entitled “Attack on Israeli Worsens Tensions With Palestinians” instead featured a photo of the 16-year-old terrorist’s mother as she was visited by her relatives. On Tuesday, the newspaper’s public editor Margaret Sullivan posted a blog in which she admitted that using the mother’s photo was the wrong decision.

THE Australian War Memorial has abandoned a proposal to remove the words "known unto God" from the Tomb of the Australian Unknown Soldier after the personal intervention of Tony Abbott. The memorial's governing council decided at its meeting in August to replace two inscriptions on the tomb at the Canberra memorial with words from a speech by Paul Keating. The memorial's director, former Liberal Party leader Brendan Nelson, announced the changes in an unscripted National Press Club speech six weeks ago on a day when attention was focused on the swearing in of the new government. It was several days...

The lawyer, Muhammad Abed, also told the Maan news agency that his client has been tortured by his jailors. "He has undergone unbelievable torture, of...

My son is about to enter the military. He will be at the tip of the spear. I would like to get him a really good watch. As I've never done anything more dangerous than clean gutters, I've no idea what sort of watch and what sort of band will stand up to what it will need to stand up to. I'd be most grateful to anyone who can provide some advice on this. Thanks so much.

You can't put a price tag on surviving a deadly attack overseas, but one Fort Hood soldier knows the cost of the helmet that saved his life all too well. "I had a couple shrapnels in my side plates and in my helmet," Army Sergeant Michael Williams said about the gear that protected him on June 13, 2011. Now, more than two years after the day he was wounded by an improvised explosive device in Iraq, he got a "bill" for his shrapnel-pierced helmet. "I automatically assumed that, you know, that's the gear that I got blown up in, that...

In late summer 2012, Army First Lieutenant Clint Lorance ordered one his "marksman to engage" Afghan men approaching their position on a motorcycle. The marksmen killed two of the three men; because they were unarmed, Lorance was charged, tried, and, in just over a year, sentenced to 20 years in Leavenworth. Yet as the Washington Times reports, the charges ignore the fact that "a common enemy tactic is for unarmed fighters on motorcycles... to track [U.S.] unit movements... with cell phones." On the other hand, after Army Major Nidal Hasan killed 13 soldiers and wounded more than 30 during his...

Well, I didn’t think I could get any more pissed today, but I’m there. First, I hear that Obama has blocked the death gratuity for families of fallen Rangers. But, I was heartened to hear a private foundation stepped up to the plate to help: After families of fallen U.S. military personnel were denied benefits due to the government shutdown, the Fisher House Foundation has stepped forward to help cover travel and funeral costs to help families receive the remains of their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The Fisher House has been providing housing and...

LAKEWOOD, Wash. - A 20-year-old active-duty soldier was stabbed to death in a parking lot at the 12500 block of Pacific Highway Southwest around 2:30 a.m., officials say. Three soldiers were walking from Joint Base Lewis-McChord along Pacific Highway SW when a group of men in a car drove by and someone inside shouted a racial comment toward the white soldiers, the Lakewood Police Department said. "One of the soldiers yelled back something about the suspects treating combat soldiers with disrespect," Lt. Chris Lawler said. The vehicle turned around, and five black males got out of the car and confronted...

Tensions between Israel and the European Union over the EU boycott of Israelis living in Judea and Samaria (Shomron) may be exacerbated by a new incident in which a French diplomat struck an IDF soldier. The incident occurred as IDF soldiers stopped a “humanitarian aid” shipment of tents and other supplies that were headed for an illegal Bedouin encampment. The equipment was to be sent to Bedouin and foreign activists in the Jordan Valley whose illegal encampment was destroyed last week after the High Court of Justice, Israel’s Supreme Court, ruled that the structures were built without proper permits. The...
