This time 31 years ago, December 23, 1981, President Ronald Reagan delivered a moving Oval Office address to the nation. The subject was Christmas and events in Poland. [ . . . ] It was a stirring moment, with the Poland drama the big story. Yet, there was another story behind the speech that isn’t remembered, but is likewise revealing. Reagan had started the speech with a wonderful opening about the reason for the season: the Christ child. . . . At this special time of year, we all renew our sense of wonder in recalling the story of the...

Lech Walesa was once a trade-union activist. He was often arrested for speaking his mind against Communist oppression behind the Iron Curtain in Poland and for defying the Soviet Union. He was an electrician who, with no higher education, led one of the most profound freedom movements of the 20th century — Solidarity. He became president of Poland and swept in reforms, pushing the Soviet Union out of his homeland and moving the country toward a free-market economy and individual liberty. And President Obama doesn’t want him to set foot in the White House.

The Democratic Party moved a step closer to embracing the Occupy Wall Street movement as its own with the top campaign arm for House Democrats sending around a petition urging people to "stand with" the movement. In an email sent Monday morning, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Director Robby Mook appealed for signatures to an online petition in support of those who want "to let billionaires, big oil and big bankers know that we're not going to let the richest 1% force draconian economic policies and massive cuts to crucial programs on Main Street Americans." This is a long, unedited video from my camera. The attacker tries twice to grab and take my camera, but the camera goes off after the first grab. I get it back on, and you see my encounter with the police. This took place during the noon hour singalong at the Wisconsin Capitol steps on August 12, 2011VIDEO

Great video at the site Some might find it jumps around a bit, but the theme is pretty clear: compared to private-sector workers, unionized public-sector workers get a pretty sweet deal once their benefits and pensions are thrown in with their salaries. Those high salaries fund union dues; those dues fund the organizations that keep Democratic lawmakers in power (or try to); the lawmakers then make sure that the public sector pay, benefits and pensions remain high and untouchable. That is what the recent fights in state capitols are about, and it is clear whose side President Obama is on.

Among the most unforgettable images of union lunacy from Wisconsin is this video of protesters dressed as cows and carrying placards spelling out “SOLIDARITY,” posted by Ann Althouse on YouTube: Solidarity CowsIt’s refreshing to see them do something funny, as a break from their usual pattern of issuing death threats, drawing chalk outlines of Governor Scott Walker’s murdered corpse, and portraying everyone who disagrees with them as Nazis or Klansmen. You might survey these colorful antics and wonder who could possibly be persuaded to take the union’s side by such a mixture of comedy and outrage. It’s a good rule...

At a fundraising event in Illinois, the old Solidarity union leader and former Polish president showed he had lost none of his passion for freedom fighting. Less than a week before TuesdayÂ’s midterm elections, Illinois conservatives welcomed an unlikely ally. Legendary Polish Solidarity leader, Lech Walesa, appeared in downtown Chicago last Thursday at a fundraising event organized by citizen watchdog group For the Good of Illinois. The former Polish president, trade-union organizer, and Nobel Prize laureate came rhetorically armed with a new Solidarity rallying-cry for Illinoisans yearning for new leadership. Before 300 conservative leaders and activists on Thursday, Walesa dourly remarked...

Poles Celebrate Memory of Priest, Martyr of CommunismWARSAW, Poland, JUNE 7, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Armed only with "truth, justice and charity," Father Jerzy Popieluszko sought to maintain and give witness to his freedom of conscience as a citizen and a priest. This was how the Polish priest was described by Archbishop Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes, when he presided over Sunday's beatification of Father Popieluszko. The priest's mother, Marianna Popieluszko, led a rosary prayed before the Mass. Father Popieluszko (1947-1984) was chaplain of Poland's Solidarity Movement, which was instrumental in the resistance to Communism. The priest was...

Leaders: The champion of Polish freedom tells America it's no longer that shining city on a hill. As it slouches toward socialism, he warns, those yearning to breathe free in the world can no longer look to the U.S. for help. They were the giants of their age. Together, President Ronald Reagan, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II and a little known shipyard worker named Lech Walesa stood up to Soviet communism and brought freedom to the captive nations of Europe. Last Friday, Walesa was in Chicago campaigning for a GOP gubernatorial candidate in the Illinois...

Twenty years ago, the Solidarity movement in Poland played a key role in overthrowing the communist regime that was then ruling the country. My wife was living in Poland during that time and tells me that there are some interesting parallels between events then and the Tea Party movement in America today. For one thing, the Solidarity movement was not limited to the labor union shipyard workers in Gdansk, but was a large grassroots movement that went way beyond labor unions and shipyards to touch just about every corner of Polish society. Today in America, the Tea Party movement, although...

I just got this note from another poster and twitter on the Americans supporting Iranian liberty & those fighting for it site on Facebook. This is pertinent right now to the situation in Iran. Twitter Folks-set your location to Tehran and your time zone to GMT +3.30. Iranian security forces are hunting for bloggers using location/timezone searches. The more people at this location, the more of a logjam it creates for forces trying to shut Iranians' access to the internet down. We have to help protect the Freedom Fighters. Please pass the word. There are ways we can help. This...

Polish battle against Communism was fought on many levels - Feature Posted : Tue, 24 Mar 2009 05:12:09 GMT Author : DPA Category : Europe (World) Szydlowiec, Poland - Aniela Wojtowicz is 92 years old, but she still remembers how fear made her knees weak when a government official entered her clothing shop in 1981. It was months before Poland's communist regime would declare martial law in response to the growing Solidarity labour movement. Wojtowicz managed a shop near the market square in Szydlowiec, a small town of 12,000 people two hours south of Warsaw. That day, she had a...

Councillors in Worcester are considering twinning the Midlands city with Gaza as a "gesture of solidarity". S The cathedral city in the heart of England has been conflict-free since the Civil War ended. Compare that to Gaza where 1,300 people were killed just last month as fresh conflict with Israel flared. The two may seem like places with little in common, but that has not stopped the Conservative-run council unanimously passing a motion to consider "twinning" the two towns. Councillors say it would be more than just a gesture and they are not doing it to support Hamas. But if...
