After encountering criticism from environmental groups, Gov. Jerry Brown signaled Wednesday that he plans to withdraw his controversial proposal to protect the California bullet train project from injunctions sought by environmental lawsuits. Brown's staff told key environmental groups that he would no longer include modifications to the California Environmental Quality Act in a package of legislation this month asking for $6 billion to start construction of the high-speed rail project.

Rio de Janeiro—“Politicians are spinning this outrageous deal as a victory but in fact it is nothing less than a disaster for the planet,” said Nnimmo Bassey, chair of Friends of the Earth International in a press release. Bassey added, “This is a hollow deal and a gift to corporate polluters that hold U.N. decision-making hostage to further their economic interests.” Kumi Naidoo, Greenpeace International Executive Director, piled on too, declaring, “Rio+20 has turned into an epic failure. Apparently even college campuses aren’t providing green jobs anymore. A survey by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (Aashe) “showed that creation of new sustainability positions peaked in 2008, then dropped 31 percent in 2009,” Dave Newport reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education on April 6, 2012.
