The 6.4 magnitude earthquake was reported around 2:40 a.m. about eight miles southwest of Ferndale in Humboldt County. For millions of people near the epicenter, an alert was sent out to their phones up to 10 seconds prior the dramatic shaking. The alert notification reads “drop, cover, and hold on.” It was sent out to an estimated 3 million Android phone users automatically through a partnership between California and Google. A quarter-million people received the warning through the MyShake app, a state-sponsored app developed by UC Berkeley that is available for download in the Android and iOS app stores.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off Taiwan's eastern coast on Thursday (Dec 15) followed by multiple lighter aftershocks, the island's weather bureau said, with shaking felt in the capital Taipei. The quake hit just after midday (12pm, Singapore time) about 30km off the coast of Hualien County at a shallow depth of 6km. The US Geological Survey reported a lower 5.9-magnitude reading and a depth of 12km.

The quake struck at a depth of 90 kilometers (roughly 56 miles) near Kainantu, a town with a population of roughly 8,500 people, the United States Geological Survey reported. The San Andreas Fault is part of a giant "Z" of faults; the top of the "Z" consists of the Ridgecrest Fault, the middle is the Garlock Fault and the bottom is the southern part of the famous San Andreas. HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Tsunami Watch has been issued for all Hawaiian islands after a large earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The quake, which struck around 7:38 a.m. HST, measured at a preliminary magnitude of 8.0, the U.S. Geological Survey said. If tsunami waves impact Hawaii, the estimated earliest arrival of the first tsunami wave would be 2:56 p.m. HST. Details are limited at this time, but the PTWC is investigating the threat to Hawaii.  This story will be updated.

A powerful earthquake has hit central Chile, causing buildings to sway in the capital Santiago. The 7.9-magnitude tremor centred off the coast, about 153 miles (246km) north-west of the capital. Chilean officials said it measured 7.2. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that "widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible". There were no immediate reports of damage, Chile's emergency office was quoted as saying by Reuters.

An earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck off the coast of northern Greece on Saturday and was felt as far away as neighboring Turkey and Bulgaria but there were no reports of serious casualties or destruction, police and fire brigade officials said. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake occurred some 77 km (48 miles) south-southwest of Alexandroupolis, between the islands of Lemnos and Samothrace, at a depth of 10 km (6 miles).
