PRUDEN: The terror of Rick Perry’s penitent prayer Wes Pruden August 9, 2011 ANALYSIS/OPINION Christians are driving atheists nuts. Atheists are trying to spread their belief — or more to the point, their lack of belief — with zeal that Billy Sunday or Billy Graham could have envied: Unless Sunday schools are closed, Bibles shredded, hymnbooks torched and children jailed when found kneeling with Mom in bedtime prayer, no one is secure in their homes. Rick Perry, the governor of Texas who nearly everyone expects to be a candidate for president of the United States, sent the atheists of Texas...

Listening to the liberal commentators on MSNBC, the left cannot stand Governor Rick Perry hosting an event of prayer and fasting in Texas. The left is irritated by the freedom to express one's religion in public. They said the governor is overstepping his boundaries in the separation of church and state. The problem with this criticism is that Rick Perry is not forcing his religion on Texans. He is not transforming the Texas government into a theocracy. Separation of church and state does not mean taking away religion from the public square. It means the government cannot force a religion...

HOUSTON—Texas Gov. Rick Perry, joining an estimated 30,000 Christians in a prayer summit at a football stadium here, gave no further hints at whether he would seek the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. "The Response," a Saturday festival organized by Mr. Perry and a cadre of Christian groups, was scheduled well before he had declared interest in running for president. But it garnered more attention this month given the governor's potential entry. Mr. Perry, who is expected to announce his decision in coming weeks, appeared on stage only twice during the seven-hour event: He spoke for a few minutes before noon,...

On August 6, the nation will come together at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas for a solemn gathering of prayer and fasting for our country. We believe that America is in a state of crisis. Not just politically, financially or morally, but because we are a nation that has not honored God in our successes or humbly called on Him in our struggles. According to the Bible, the answer to a nation in such crisis is to gather in humility and repentance and ask God to intervene. The Response will be a historic gathering of people from across the nation...

Rock on Governor Perry...'For when two or three come together in My Name...there am I in the midst of them..." We need to be getting together to gather the strength to do what we know has to be done...and we need the guidance of great wisdom to understand the deceptions presented by those who would harm us.

AUSTIN, Tex. — In April, as Texas reeled from wildfires and a drought, Gov. Rick Perry sought assistance from the federal government, but also from a higher power. He asked the state to pray for rain, issuing an official proclamation that “I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, under the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Statutes of the State of Texas, do hereby proclaim the three-day period from Friday, April 22, 2011, to Sunday, April 24, 2011, as Days of Prayer for Rain in the State of Texas.”

As I wrote last week, there are a number of troubling facets of the New Apostolic Reformation [NAR] that cry out for media attention. The NAR is the significant, yet relatively little-known religious movement embraced by many prominent endorsers of Texas Governor Rick Perry's upcoming prayer event, "The Response". It represents a major break with the Religious Right of the past: it's not about issues or even "values". It's about power, pure and simple. About taking over the world, a form of Christian dominionism, and as I described, they've even got a seven-point plan for doing so - the "Seven...

As a native Texan, I'm used to crazy religion and crazy politics. So, the announcement of Gov. Rick Perry's plans for “The Response,” a prayer event scheduled for Aug. 6 at Houston's Reliant Stadium, was not a surprise. But as a Presbyterian minister and community organizer, it's part of my job to stand up for my neighbors. The use of the governor's office to promote one religion in a country with such rich religious diversity is obviously unhealthy politics, but -- if one takes the Christian and Jewish scriptures seriously -- it is also unhealthy religion. Here are five rather...

TALLAHASSEE -- Gov. Rick Scott isn't heading to Texas for Gov. Rick Perry's all-day prayer meeting Aug. 6, but he is sending a video, he told reporters. Scott has previously said that he thinks Perry will ultimately jump in the race for President, but he said he hasn't actively encouraged him to do so. "I’ve not encouraged anyone to get in the race for president," he said. All of the Republican presidential candidates have reached out to Scott thus far, but he has not endorsed any of them.

Gov. Rick Perry’s planned Aug. 6 day of prayer and fasting, “the Response,” has garnered a range or reactions over the last month, from Houston clergy expressing concern about the blurring of lines between church and state, to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force decrying the rally as “profoundly harmful.” What almost every denouncement of “the Response” has in common is shock that the governor would align himself with the American Family Association, an organization listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. For those who’ve followed Perry’s political career closely, however, his connections with a...

HOUSTON, July 28 (UPI) -- A federal judge in Houston Thursday dismissed a suit trying to keep Texas Gov. Rick Perry from attending a prayer event next month. U.S. District Judge Gray Miller, an appointee of President George W. Bush, dismissed the case after finding the plaintiffs, a group advocating the separation of church and state, had no standing, ABC News reported. To sue, plaintiffs must show "standing" -- that they have suffered some harm. The judge cited a ruling by a federal appeals court in favor of President Obama promoting a "national day of prayer." Perry, a possible Republican...
