Paul Desmond (alto sax), Joe Morello (drums), Eugene Wright (bass) and Dave Brubeck (piano) Live in Belgium, 1964 One of the most iconic Jazz songs of the 1950s/1960s. The song's title came about when drummer Joe Morello asked the sax player, Paul Desmond, to write a song in 5/4 time, rather than the conventional 4/4 or 3/4. Morello played an unforgettable drum solo in the middle of the song.

On Tuesday’s broadcast of Fox News Radio’s “Brian Kilmeade Show,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called for the U.S. “to shut down the immigration system and have a timeout” like we shut down travel from China and some other nations.

A phenomenon of quantum mechanics known as superposition can impact timekeeping in high-precision clocks, according to a theoretical study from Dartmouth College, Saint Anselm College and Santa Clara University. Research describing the effect shows that superposition—the ability of an atom to exist in more than one state at the same time—leads to a correction in atomic clocks known as "quantum time dilation." The research, published in the journal Nature Communications, takes into account quantum effects beyond Albert Einstein's theory of relativity to make a new prediction about the nature of time. In the early 1900s, Albert Einstein presented a revolutionary...

HOUSTON – Following 20 months of construction of the new Ship Channel Bridge along the Beltway 8, the county has issued a pause. Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia said the decision was made following the discovery of a design flaw with part of the bridge. “I want to make sure that we are doing everything on behalf of public safety to ensure that everything is well,” Garcia said. “This was obviously concerning and alarming for me." John Tyler, the deputy director of engineering with the Harris County Toll Road Authority and in charge of the project, said the flaw was...

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – New Braunfels ISD responded Friday to a complaint from parents of a student at Carl Schurz Elementary School being in a "FOCUS room." A website, called "The 'Focus Room' Horror" and dated May 13, shows photos of a visibly upset boy sitting on the floor of a room. The website writes that the boy is a 9-year-old student named Alex and states that he was confined to the room for more than an hour. According to the website, Alex was told to sit in a circle drawn on the floor for 90 minutes "to earn 90...

(Reuters) - Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, whose choice of novel rhythms, classical structures and brilliant sidemen made him a towering figure in modern jazz, has died at the age of 91, his longtime manager and producer Russell Gloyd said on Wednesday. Brubeck died of heart failure on Wednesday morning after he fell ill on his way to a regular medical exam at Norwalk Hospital, in Norwalk, Conn., a day short of his 92nd birthday, Gloyd said. His Dave Brubeck Quartet put out one of the best selling jazz songs of all time: "Take Five," composed by alto saxophonist Paul Desmond....

So, after a week in hospital, I came home, still feeling cranky, dispirited and totally useless. Feeling old and worthless, to be honest. 20 hour days in your thirties are fine. At my age, they try to kill you. The week in hospital was not pleasant. Oh, the doctors did a good job, balanced my body again, fed me well both food wise (as well as they can with a dietician watching) and intravenously and made damn sure I slept a lot, but they could not do much about the feeling of betrayal I felt with myself. I have always...

I'm writing to address a problem of increasing scope -- duplicate threads. Let me be clear: I'm not talking about the rare threads that are blessed by management, and are duplicated because of their critical importance. I'm talking about the everyday duplication of the same story over and over again. There are several reasons I see for us getting duplicate threads: people thinking they get special credit for being "first to post", so multiple people post a breaking story. people who are too lazy to search People who think they are too important to search. bloggers who think that if...

TV timeout? Blame the guy in the red hat Saturday, September 12, 2009 3:26 AM By Tim Feran THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH If you become irate over a long TV timeout during tonight's game between Ohio State University and the University of Southern California, there's a good reason to see red. A person called the "red hat" is to blame. Known officially as the TV commercial timeout coordinator, the official stands on the sidelines, wears a red hat and is responsible for when to stop and start play on the field for commercial breaks. "It's not very easy," said Oliver Dizon,...

As harrowing as the U.S. stock market's plunges have been in recent days, they still haven't been enough to trigger the "circuit breaker" mechanisms that result in an automatic timeout in trading. The Big Board implemented the automatic halts after the stock market crashed in the late 1980s to force traders to take a break from frenzied selling. But even amid the massive losses seen in the market this week, the thresholds have yet to be breached, unlike in many other nations which have temporarily suspended trading multiple times. On Friday, the stock exchange in Vienna was suspended until midday...

3 emails: You offer no proof for a pro choice past for Thompson. Show us the clip on youtube. Oh wait there is not one? NRLC endorsed Thompson? The truth is sir that you look rather sad and silly to those who remember your earlier "debate" with Thompson regarding federalism where he humbled you. You want YouTube? Here you go. Hi just read your interesting article on national review online on GOP flip floppers. However, the paragraph on Thompson was confusing. Are you saying he used to be Pro-choice and he has changed his position and is lying about it?...

The History channel is regirgitating a slanted viewpoint of the 9-11 terrorist attack on America. A coverage that the DNC would be proud to endorse. I wrote them an email just before this posting: Your programming of the events of 9-11 is dispicably slanted to the extreme left. It's as if the Democratic National Committee made this footage in preparing for the upcoming national elections by denigrating the President of the United States, placing in your interviews known extreme leftest, liberal wackos on this disgusting program. I will let the whitehouse, and news stations of this dispicable anti-Bush slanted coverage...

University Park, Pa. -- A Penn State analysis of the diets of a nationally representative sample of U.S. preschoolers, ages 2 to 5, shows that more than three-quarters of the children are not getting enough fiber. Children who consumed the most fiber also had the most nutrient-rich diets. However, all children in the study ate fewer dairy servings than recommended by the Food Guide Pyramid. "There is clinical evidence that children with low fiber intakes are at risk of chronic constipation," said Sibylle Kranz, assistant professor of nutritional sciences who led the study. "However, there are also other reasons to...

I'm a Roadrunner user. All of a sudden I cannot reach certain domains. For example, I cannot access google(!) I can ping it at 216.239.57.99 or at www.google.com. Tracert shows time-outs at hop 13. I cannot ping lerc.nasa.gov (128.156.10.12) (timeouts)--but IE can get there with no problems (unlike last night). Tracert to www.jetico.com [62.142.11.131] works, but the site cannot be accessed from my browser. Tracert to to www.grc.com [204.1.226.226] fails with time-outs. Tracert to www.iwon.com [208.45.133.25] fails with a very interesting message: 15 * iwon-gw.customer.alter.net [157.130.91.82] reports: Destination net unreachable. So far the RR tech support has been no help...
