MANILA, August 14, 2011— An exorcist has led a ritual outside the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Sunday to ask for God’s forgiveness for those who “dishonored the image of Christ.”Fr. Michelle Joe Zerrudo of the Diocese of Cubao said the prayer was being offered to compensate for whatever has been done to God by those behind the controversial art exhibit at the CCP.“This is an act of love for God to make up for the lack of love. This is not a political rally but simply a religions event,” Zerrudo said.“Regardless of what has been done, we...

Tridentine Community News (June 19, 2011):[Today’s column is an update of our June 25, 2006 edition.] If you have been attending the Tridentine Mass for a while, you have surely noticed that a greater variety of vestments is used than is typically seen at a Novus Ordo Mass. Today we will examine what they are, as well as their symbolism. The base garment that a priest wears is the black cassock, or robe. This is the same type of robe that altar servers wear. Over the shoulders of the cassock, a priest wears an amice, a white hood-like garment that symbolizes...

As already noted, Gregory DiPippo is at the Summorum Pontificum conference in Rome and will be providing photos and a full report this week, but I'm happy to share a few tidbits. Regarding the actual talks of the conference, some interesting details are emerging, including a call made by Bishop Athanasius Schneider for a motu proprio re-establishing the minor orders and subdiaconate throughout the Latin rite. One more item to share today however, video and a couple photos from John Sonnen showing some of today's Solemn Pontifical Mass at the Altar of the Chair in St. Peter's Basilica.

Here is an excerpt from a lengthy and very thoughtful address on the new translation of the Roman Missal given last month by Auxiliary Bishop James Conley of Denver at the Midwest Theological Forum in Valparaiso, Indiana: The key point here is that the words we pray matter. What we pray makes a difference in what we believe. Our prayer has implications for how we grasp the saving truths that are communicated to us through the liturgy. For instance, our current translation almost always favors abstract nouns to translate physical metaphors for God. If the Latin prayer refers to the...

Pope Benedict XVI / Photo Credit Mazur Vatican City, May 13, 2011 / 10:55 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Local dioceses should give a “generous welcome” to any laity who wish to attend Mass in the “extraordinary form” and to priests who wish to say it.  That’s the key message of new Vatican guidelines regarding the extraordinary form of the Mass – often popularly referred to as the “Tridentine Mass” or “old Latin Mass.” The “extraordinary form” is the rite of Mass contained within the Roman Missal which was universally used from 1570 to 1962. It was almost always celebrated in...

When the secular media suddenly start talking about Catholic liturgy, something is afoot in the life of the Church. By the second year of Pope Benedict XVI's pontificate, that's exactly what happened. The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, U.S. News and World Report -- the subject was everywhere.   The reason for all this attention was the pope's long-awaited motu proprio that would make the traditional Latin Mass of the pre-conciliar Church (or the 1962 Missal) more widely available. That used to be considered a dangerous idea. It's now mainstream.   The consensus today...

Keep in mind that the Pontifical Mass was to be celebrated in honor of the anniversary of the election of Pope Benedict. This year will also bring the 60th Jubilee of the Holy Father's ordination. The Paulus Institute had organized the Lenten Mass in honor of the Holy Father on the sixth anniversary of his election to the papacy. It was to have been the second such Mass, the first having been offered at the National Shrine last year before a capacity congregation of over 4,000. Unfortunately, this year’s scheduled celebrant, Archbishop Augustine DiNoia of the Congregation for Divine Worship...

Jack Schmidt converted to Catholicism about a decade ago and never learned Latin. But that's the language he prefers for Mass.... Andrew Davis does know Latin and struggles in English to describe how much the traditional Latin Mass means to him. "The liturgy is so beautiful and inspiring," the Corinth college student said. "It's something that really raises my heart and mind to God." For Schmidt, Davis and a few hundred other North Texas Catholics, this is a big day. Mater Dei Catholic Church, local home of the traditional Latin Mass, will be in its own sanctuary for the first...

... It was partly because of the veils that I loved the TLM more than the regular Mass. My distracted mind is incapable of the kind of worship I'd like to render, but every little bit helps. However, now my behavior was inconsistent. Our Lord is just as present and just as worthy of adoration at a Novus Ordo Mass (although the NO Mass does not demonstrate this fact nearly as well), but I was veiling only on Sundays and not for the other six Masses of the week. Of course this was because there weren't very many women wearing...

Many of the old things are back now: pre-Vatican II Mass, fiddle-back vestments, cappa magnas, birettas, Communion on the tongue, and so forth. Seminarians and young priests – in Roman collar, of course – go for traditional liturgical ceremonial. The Vatican takeover of English translations from national bishops’ conferences is nearly complete. Meanwhile, it looks like the Pope and the Holy See are planning to sit out the sex abuse crisis without admitting any fault or instituting any real reforms. I bet your friends too are talking about this. What are they saying? In some circles, all this demonstrates a...

The Traditional Latin Mass planned for April 24th honoring Pope Benedict on his five-year anniversary was scheduled to have Cardinal Dario Castrillon-Hoyos as the celebrant. Not any more. As you probably know, a significant controversy has erupted over a letter sent by the Cardinal expressing gratitude to a Bishop for not turning over a sexually offending priest to civil authorities. The hue and cry that has erupted from this revelation is significant. As a result, the Cardinal is out as the celebrant at the planned Traditional Latin Mass for the 24th of April. Good news from Rome: the Vatican has further underlined the freedom of priests to celebrate Mass in the Extraordinary Form whenever they choose. Two important points have been clarified by Ecclesia Dei, which will make it more difficult for the English, Welsh and above all Scottish bishops to stall the implementation of Summorum Pontificum: 1. A priest does NOT have to be approached by a “stable group” of the faithful in order to schedule a PUBLIC celebration of the Extraordinary Form – he may choose to do so, for example, in order to introduce his parishioners to this ancient form...
