A new English translation of the Order of Mass is the biggest church issue U.S. bishops will face when they meet June 15-17 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Bishops will also be asked to approve a 10-year extension of the annual collection for retired religious and a plan to write a message to teenagers on stewardship, and a no-increase 2007 assessment on dioceses for support of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Before the bishops vote on the new translation of the Order of Mass, Bishop Arthur Roche of Leeds, England, president of the International Commission on...

It's the Church's Bible by Dr. Jeff Mirus, special to CatholicCulture.orgMay 5, 2006 In a recent issue of First Things editor Richard John Neuhaus criticized the New American Bible and commented on some problems plaguing modern Biblical translations in general. One of the contributors to the revised NAB wrote in to defend the scholarship of the translators. Fr. Neuhaus replied that the Bible is “the Church’s Bible, not the Bible of the academic guild.” What can this possibly mean? Determining MeaningOne of the examples Fr. Neuhaus used was Genesis 1:1-3. What has been traditionally rendered as “In the beginning God...

I have spent some time compiling the translations of Freeper Jveritas at the link above. I am enlisting help in editing/critiquing my compilation. The format I used was to assign each translation the Freep URL code for the post and the Harmony database the same code. This way a unique code will be assigned automatically as JV puts up a new translation. Way I figure, these translations need to be compiled in a manner other blogs, the talk show radio hosts, maybe the cable news and heaven forbid, the mainstream media, can see comprehensively. I'm hoping other freepers will help...

In Shahda’s own words: I feel a great sense of duty to do the translation of some these documents because that is the least I can do in time of war to serve the United States of America to whom I am in eternal debt and gratitude, and what I am doing is a small pay back toward this debt that I can never fully repay no matter what I do. My efforts to do the translation pale in comparison to the great efforts and sacrifice that our brave troops are doing on a daily basis. I asked Shahda during...

Multiple English translations of the Qur'an, Islam's scripture, line shelves at book stores. Amazon.com sells more than a dozen. Because of the growing Muslim communities in English-speaking countries, as well as greater academic interest in Islam, there has been a blossoming in recent years of English translations. Muslims view the Qur'an as God's direct words revealed in Arabic to the Prophet Muhammad (d. 632).[1] Because the Qur'an stresses its Arabic nature, Muslim scholars believe that any translation cannot be more than an approximate interpretation, intended only as a tool for the study and understanding of the original Arabic text.[2] Since...

Russian was translated into English by an electronic "brain" today for the first time. Brief statements about politics, law, mathematics, chemistry, metallurgy, communications and military affairs were submitted in Russian by linguists of the Georgetown University Institute of Languages and Linguistics to the famous 701 computer of the International Business Machines Corporation. And the giant computer, within a few seconds, turned the sentences into easily readable English. A girl who didn't understand a word of the language of the Soviets punched out the Russian messages on IBM cards. The "brain" dashed off its English translations on an automatic printer at...

Destroying is much easier than Building To build a wall with proper foundations takes a long time. To knock down that wall takes a short time. To design and assemble a motor car takes a long time. To crash it and make it a write-off takes a short time. To create a Tradition of English Public Worship & Common Prayer takes centuries. To desert it or to rubbish it or to destroy it takes not more than a decade. In the 1960s (with roots reaching back into earlier times) and on into the 1970s a Tradition that had existed for...

Today Issues of Spirituality - Part 1 "And concerning the spiritual things, brethren, I do not wish you to be ignorant" (1 Corinthians 12:1 YGB). How vulnerable we are to the assortment of biblical translations available today; often not realizing that translations almost inevitably are also interpretations delineating the translators' particular viewpoint on specific issues. Our text in this message is one that has suffered from a variety of interpretations through translation. One can be subject to considerable confusion about the real meaning of our text simply because of the broad discrepancies existing in translation. For example, King James translated...

I am looking for some statistical information on the popularity of various bible translations. My company will be introducing a product in a few months that features a customizable scripture imprint. We plan on offering The King James Version and would like to include up to 5 other translations in hopes of satisfying the largest possible demographic. A couple of questions for the Free Republican Theologian Society. 1) Catholics what is the preferred version in the US today. Douay Rheims, NAB, ? 2) Protestants - Outside of the KJV what are the most popular translations. We were...

Translating the Bible The Hebrew text of the Old Testament now in use is a highly standardized text that was consolidated, fine-tuned, and faithfully transmitted by Jewish scholars and scribes of the Middle Ages, called the Masoretes. Using as their guide the oral and written traditions that had been handed down from the ancient rabbis, the Masoretes worked to preserve and safeguard what they believed to be the definitive text of the Hebrew Bible. The same pious motives led them to suppress all competing textual traditions. In addition to conservation, they were responsible for an exceptionally important innovation. Up to the time of the Masoretes the Hebrew language...

QUESTION: The King James Bible is a mere translation from Greek to English. A translation can't be as good as the originals, can it? ANSWER: A translation cannot be only be "as good" as the originals, but better.

Lost in the translation A literature scholar says words, more than meanings, are importantBy Joel BelzSince it's still January, I know it won't impress you much to say that The Word of God in English by Leland Ryken is the most important book I've read this year. Even to call it my most important read of the century —or, for that matter, of the millennium—may be, in the year 2003, to damn it with faint praise. But you get the point. If the Bible itself is the most important book ever to confront the human race, I will argue that...

When WORLD reader Jonathan Clough recently informed the Colorado Springs-based International Bible Society he no longer would be sending contributions, he had no idea of the chain reaction his letter would begin. The letter cited objections to IBS's new "gender-inclusive" TNIV Bible and the controversial actions surrounding its release (WORLD, Feb. 23, 2002). It brought a reply from Cathe Temmerman, IBS's director of donor communications. She expressed regret at his decision, then launched into a defense of IBS's actions. A copy of that letter landed on the desk of James Dobson, head of the influential Focus on the Family ministry...
