Officially, retired Army Capt. Gary “Mike” Rose was never in Laos at the height of the Vietnam War. Rose, now 69, served as a medic in the Military Assistance Command Studies and Observations Group, an elite division of the Special Forces. It was so secret that, for more than four decades, he never spoke about it to anyone – not even the people he served with. Those that served with him, however, never forgot the bravery he showed during a four-day mission, called “Operation Tailwind,” in the landlocked country in September 1970. Rose, then a sergeant, ran through a hail...

President Trump will award the Medal of Honor to Ret. Army Capt. Gary M. Rose, a Vietnam War veteran, for risking his life as a medic to provide emergency treatment to his fellow troops. Rose, who lives in Huntsville, Ala., is expected to receive the nation's highest military honor on Oct. 23, the White House said in a statement on Wednesday. Rose was awarded the nation’s second highest medal for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross, in 1971. Members of the military and Congress have lobbied for years for him to receive the Medal of Honor, according to Stars and Stripes...

Don Hall was sitting in his living room watching TV with his girlfriend about 9:30 p.m. earlier this year when he was startled by flashing police car lights in his driveway. Hall met the Oneida County sheriff's deputies in the driveway, worried that they were bringing bad news about a family member. Instead, the deputies produced an official document demanding that Hall, a 70-year-old Vietnam veteran who is a retired pipefitter, turn over his guns to them on the spot. On the document Hall said he was described as "mentally defective." When Hall told police he'd never had any mental...

President Donald Trump will award his first Medal of Honor as president to James McCloughan of the US Army for “conspicuous gallantry during the Vietnam War.” In a ceremony planned for July 31, McCloughan will receive the honor for actions he took over the course of 48 hours in close-combat fighting against enemy forces in Vietnam in 1969. McCloughan, who was 23 at the time, was serving as a private first class combat medic after being drafted. He voluntarily risked his life on nine separate occasions to rescue wounded and disoriented comrades. He suffered wounds from shrapnel and small arms...

On May 13th, 1967, I was shot through my upper right thigh, shattering my femur and almost severing my leg. I celebrate this day every year because it was the day I almost died but through God’s grace, I have lived this half century more. I was a twenty-one year old Lance Corporal (E-3) in the Marines serving as an Artillery Scout (an enlisted Forward Observer) with Golf Company 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines (2/1) about 16 kilometers Southwest of Danang, Vietnam. Our company was on a local sweep a little north of Hill 55, following the edge of the Song...

Colonel Thorsness, who had been brutalized during his six years of captivity at the notorious North Vietnamese prison known as the Hanoi Hilton, where he was a cellmate of John McCain’s, was 85. President Trump signed in to law on Tuesday an act of Congress that honors Vietnam veterans with their own day of recognition, according to a White House statement. The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 designates every March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day and calls for the U.S. flag to be flown that day to honor those who served in Vietnam. The bill was co-sponsored by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN). The bill passed the Senate last month and cleared the House last week. The Three Soldiers Statue, part of the Vietnam Veterans...

Two weeks ago, a senior commander with the U.S. Army’s 1st Cavalry Division, serving in battle-hardened Afghanistan, sent a letter to Auburn, Alabama. It was addressed to a national hero. “You are a true legend…and continue to inspire the troops of today, all across the globe,” he wrote. “We hold one of your edicts close to our hearts – ‘No second-place trophies.’ The winning spirit is alive and well.” A few months earlier, movie stars Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn made a special trip to Auburn for the sole purpose of seeing this same hero. He and Gibson had met...

  • Vietnam vet with no known family to be buried in Casper; His son died in Iraq

he knows he served with honor in Vietnam. She knows he loved cooking and Bruce Springsteen. She knows he died lonely in Casper. But that’s about all Natrona County Coroner Connie Jacobson knows for certain about Stephen Carl Reiman, a 63-year-old homeless Navy veteran who died Thursday at Wyoming Medical Center. Her office has looked for a friend or a family member to claim Reiman. They haven’t found anyone. The other thing Jacobson knows is that Reiman needs to be buried with respect. And that he shouldn’t be alone. Reiman came to Wyoming from a Southern California community for homeless...

A telemarketer called and asked me to donate. They want me to send my payment to PO Box 44260 West Allis WI. I looked up the website and they are located in Washington D.C. Another google search brought up a story by the Washington Times showing the CEO driving away in a Rolls Royce. Other searches state this is the worst place to give donations. Please provide any info you have. I have donated to them is years past but something here just doesn't feel right. Thanks in advance.

This to me, is a total disgrace to America and our Veterans that served during Viet Nam. We have a wall with names of fallen Veterans that served this Country for it's freedoms and making it safe, and this President goes there and offers them weapons and other things... Maybe I am upset because a lot of people I knew served there, people I grew up with, boys that I dated, men that I rode with, that never came back home... I was privledged to see the "Viet Nam Wall" when I went with the Rolling Thunder out of PA....

In a move that is raising concerns among some Vietnam War veterans, President Obama will discuss selling more U.S. arms to Hanoi during his visit to Vietnam that began Sunday night. Top White House advisers said Mr. Obama hasn’t made a decision whether to lift the partial U.S. embargo on sending military equipment to Vietnam, where more than 58,200 U.S. soldiers were killed before the fall of Saigon in 1975. But the administration sees advantages in easing the embargo, both as a warning to expansionist China and as leverage to compel the communist regime in Hanoi to improve its record...

A few days before Thanksgiving this year, James Beavers, a staff sergeant with the US Army during Vietnam, died at the age of 74. However, after searching for family members of Sgt. Beavers for three weeks, no one was able to locate any. However, it was what followed, in both the burial and those in attendance that was simply stunning. Following Beavers' death, D. O. McComb and Sons, a local funeral home in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, decided to step up and provide not only funeral services for Beavers, but also burial, with full military honors. Somehow, the news of Beavers'...

Donald Trump today took lots of shots at John McCain, including––most shockingly––the fact that he was a prisoner of war while serving in Vietnam Trump’s been feuding with McCain after McCain said Trump is “firing up the crazies” with his outlandish rhetoric, and Trump fired back by calling McCain a “dummy. Trump sat down on stage with pollster Frank Luntz at the Family Leadership Summit and continued to fire back at McCain (while still bragging about the crowd he drew because that’s his modus operandi).

Listen to what Trump just said about John McCain,” Kerry was saying over the phone. “ ‘He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.’ ” “That’s unbelievable,” Kerry said. “That’s beyond outrageous.” “John and I have some serious differences on a lot of things but he is nothing other than a hero and a good man....
