With war expanding in the Middle East, Russia's invasion of Ukraine still raging and China threatening to invade Taiwan, the world has arguably not been closer to the brink of nuclear war in generations. Researchers have begun sounding the alarm once again about the risks of a nuclear winter: picture an Earth hidden from the sun by as much as 165 million tons of soot and freezing 16 degrees Fahrenheit down from global mean temperatures. All-out nuclear war could shrivel up harvests worldwide, reducing global calorie production by 90 percent according to agricultural and atmospheric scientists. But an international team...

ut across the plains of South Dakota, over 1,500 bison (Bison bison bison) were rounded up recently as part of efforts to protect the species and maintain the health of the herd. Every year, the Custer State Park holds this annual health check to make sure the bison are thriving and help to vaccinate the year's new calves. Moving these animals, where the males can reach as tall as 1.82 meters (6 feet) and weigh approximately 900 kilograms (2,000 pounds), is no small matter – and keeping the species safe is vitally important. Bison used to be plentiful across the...

Roasting garlic is not hard. You cut off the top, drizzle some olive oil on the exposed cloves, and wrap it all up in foil. Easy enough—but roasting it upside down in a ramekin is even easier. For one, you don’t have to worry about stocking foil or cloves sticking to the foil, which always happens with at least one of mine (usually the biggest, most tantalizing one, because we live in a taunting, cruel world). Roasting your garlic in a ramekin is, dare I say it, easier than roasting it in foil, because you don’t have to wrap anything....

TERAMO, Italy — Insects and bugs aren’t exactly the most appetizing food items, but that doesn’t stop a quarter of the earth’s population — an estimated two billion people — from eating insects on a daily basis. It can be hard for the rest of us to wrap our heads around eating bugs, but that doesn’t change the fact that many insects are excellent sources of protein, fiber, and vitamins. Now, a new study out of Italy has found one more reason to consider eating insects; certain types are absolutely packed with antioxidants. To be clear, researchers only analyzed insects...

The Washington Post, which obtained an advance copy of the book, reported that he once ordered “two Big Macs, two Fillet-O-Fish, and a chocolate malted.” As our sister publication Extra Crispy points out, the fast food chain does not offer a “chocolate malted”—but...

But imagine what you thought may have been an eyelash turns out to actually be a worm wriggling around. This was the reality for a teenager in Mexico. The unnamed 17-year-old boy began to feel increasingly intolerable pain in his right eye. His vision also quickly declined, to the point where he could only see hand motions. After three weeks of dealing with the pain, he decided it was time to seek out a doctor, according to his case published in The New England Journal of Medicine. An eye examination revealed a flatworm, that was 3 millimeters (0.12 inches) long...

ALos Angeles man ordered fried chicken from a KFC restaurant in Willowbook but instead got a plate of crispy, breaded fried rat, he claims.. Food of the future Credit: Chad Zuber | Shutterstock.com As the human population continues to inch closer to 8 billion people, feeding all those hungry mouths will become increasingly difficult. A growing number of experts claim that people will soon have no choice but to consume insects. As if to underscore that claim, a group of students from McGill University in Montreal has won the 2013 Hult Prize, for producing a protein-rich flour made from insects. The prize gives the students $1 million in seed money to begin creating what they call Power Flour. "We will be starting with grasshoppers,"...

The mass-produced tomatoes we buy at the grocery store tend to taste more like cardboard than fruit. Now researchers have discovered one reason why: a genetic mutation, common in store-bought tomatoes, that reduces the amount of sugar and other tasty compounds in the fruit. SNIP But the new study, published this week in Science, found that the mutation that leads to the uniform appearance of most store-bought tomatoes has an unintended consequence: It disrupts the production of a protein responsible for the fruit's production of sugar. SNIP The study authors set out to pin down the genetic change that makes...
