Fellow Freepers I am in need of assistance from your personal experiences. I'm looking for a place to spend a week relaxing/reading books on a balcony in September. What I'm trying to find is a nice hotel with great mountain or coastal views in the US. Would prefer something that's not at the base of a mtn but up the hill so to speak or on a rocky coastline. Want to park my butt for a week, drink wine, read books, eat, relax. Don't seem to be finding answers on travel sites. Any and all recommendations appreciated!
Telluride Colorado. It’s beautiful
Not all that long a drive for you

Have you looked into the Sleeping Bear Dunes area in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan? It was voted the most beautiful place in America on Good Morning America last year. The maple trees might be just right by then.
The Inn at Castle Hill in Newport.
Big Bend National Park - Fort Davis Texas
I agree with Raycpa. The White Mountains of NH are stunning. Check the Omni Mount Washington in Bretton Woods, NH.
Try the Boundary waters wilderness on the border of Canada and Minnesota.

There used to be a nice hotel in the Smokies near Elkmont campgrounds, only a few minutes drive from Gatlinburg. You might find it through googling Elkmont campgrounds.
Ft. Bragg, CA.
Although not a rocky coastline....Cocoa Beach, FL is quite relaxing. It is not as touristy as other FL beaches....and there is no driving on the beach (less noise, fumes). And it is still close enough to restaurants and stores if you need anything
All the recommendations for places out West (assuming your NJ flag represents your starting and return to points) would require flying. So after your nice, peaceful, edifying week surrounded by magnificent scenery, you will have to deal w/the airlines/TSA/Liberty, etc.
Why not go someplace you can drive to within 2 hours or so? I spend a week each summer @ Long Beach Island, which is nice (well, we’ll see how nice it is next month, I haven’t been there since Sandy). In the off-season you should be able to get a really lovely place for less than half the cost of summer rentals. Others have suggested the Poconos or Catskills, which would be good too.
You will have to decide if the destination itself offsets the aggravation of getting there or if you’re better staying closer to home. Whichever, your week sounds just wonderful.
Your average ski resort should be pretty quiet this time of year and you’ll find that rooms and suites that normally go for $500 to $1000 a night in ski season can be had for as little as $45 a night in the summer.
You beat me to it. Harbor Lites Lodge overlooking Noyo harbor. Fireplace in the room and a nice balcony to watch the fishing boats come and go.
We spent many great times there.
Oregon coast is amazing.
Bring a sweater though.
