Real Viking Ship Completes North Atlantic Crossing

The world’s largest viking ship has arrived in North America after crossing the North Atlantic Ocean on a journey from its homeport in Haugesund, Norway.

The Viking ship, named Draken Harald Hårfagre, set sail from Norway with its approximately 32 crew members in late April and made stops in Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland, Canada, before making its way through the Saint Lawrence Seaway to Toronto for the Tall Ships Challenge Great Lakes 2016 festival this weekend.

Future stops for the Viking ship include Chicago, Green Bay and Duluth, before heading to U.S. east coast with stops in New York City and finally Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut in October.

Draken Harald Hårfagre is actually not a replica, rather a real-life Viking ship built based ancient Norwegian boat building techniques dug up from the history books and archaeological findings. Construction was completed in 2014 and it is now heralded as the world’s largest Viking ship ever built in modern times.

How do they define "replica" here? Sure sounds like a replica to me. A very good and accurate replica but a replica all the same. In my book the only way it's a "real viking ship" is a) there are still real vikings around who built and finished it a couple years ago or b) someone discovered an authentic 1000 year old viking ship that was still seaworthy.

That is beautiful-and certainly a testament to how well the old shipbuilding techniques worked...

Better check that ship for filthy Islamic Muslims who might have jumped on that ship in Norway to come here to get on our dole.

I fail to see what distinguishes it from this Viking ship which made the trip from New York to Norway in 1982, some 34 years ago.

I followed the you tube videos of the costruction and voyage.
The videos were annoying due to being too short.

Still cool though.

How do they define "replica" here? Sure sounds like a replica to me. A very good and accurate replica but a replica all the same.

This is supposition on my part but based on the late, lamented Bounty II (lost at sea during the Sandy superstorm of 2012). The Bounty II was a replica of the original HMS Bounty built for the Marlon Brando MGM film, "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1962). While designed from the British Admiralty ship-plans, it was actually made twice the size and burden to accommodate the requirements for filming.

Thus my supposition is that this ship, the Draken Harald Hårfagre, is a step up from replica status (as commonly used) in being an exact copy and built in the same manner as its predecessors.

Anyhow of finding its itinerary of stops. Would be cool to watch it go through the Soo Locks in Sault Sainte marie on its way too of back from Duluth.

Not “real”.

Just “replica”.
