While some 14-year-olds are scoring their mall to find the latest fashions, Caroline Moore discovered a supernova in a nearby galaxy.

Astronomers say Moore is the youngest person to ever discover a supernova — and in her case, an extremely rare one, ScienceDaily.com reports.

The supernova, that scientists have coined SN 2008ha, is a new type of stellar explosion that may be the weakest of its kind ever seen.

Cool, but how does this happen? How do the pros miss something that a young girl can find on a tiny little home telescope?

“... Caroline Moore discovered a supernova in a nearby galaxy.”

Well now..., doesn’t she get something named after her then?

While some 14-year-olds are scoring their mall to find the latest fashions,

No doubt some are scoring, but I would hope they would be scouring looking for fashions.
Good job for the telescope kid though...

There’s a lot of space to look at and hers was the telescope that happened to be looking at the right place.

The article and the link say she used a “small telescope,” but don’t give any more details about it. It would really be neat to see exactly how she did it and the exact equipment she used. Let’s hope she writes an article giving all the details.

Do you have a link to where you found the picture and an accompanying article? It looks like she has a pretty sophisticated amateur setup. All I have is an 8” Celestron I lug around to the best places.
