The Double Quasar image bodes well for the UK's future in radio astronomy
E-Merlin is an array of seven linked UK radio telescopes, updated last year with fibre optic technology that has vastly increased its power.
Light from the Double Quasar has been bent by a massive object between it and the Earth, resulting in a double image.
This gravitational lensing is a powerful demonstration of one aspect of Einstein's theory of relativity.
The quasar - short for quasi-stellar radio source - sprays out tremendous amounts of energy and matter, powered by a super-massive black hole at its heart.
The E-Merlin image shows how gravitational lensing can produce multiple images of the quasar. Visible at the top is a rich picture of the quasar and the jet of radio waves coming out of it at near light-speeds.
Below that is a duplicate image of the quasar; just above it is the fainter image of the nearer galaxy that does the lensing.

I’m glad I’m stupid, otherwise I would feel really stupid not understand what all this means.

What it means is that man's mind is too small to begin to comprehend the enormity of God's creation.
The Universe is Gi-normous. Yet He holds us in His hand and we are the 'apple of His eye.'
I can't explain it because there are no words to declare the vastness and goodness of the Creator.
OH, I can unequivocally state that His name is not ahlahahaha. He Is and there is no other.
1 In principio creavit Deus cælum et terram.
A person could spend an entire lifetime just studying those two verses.

No argument here, even though I will have to revisit my old Latin and Hebrew text books to fully interpret your last comments. LOL!

I thought Superscope was the Hong Kong anamorphic lens system for making movies. Now that’s dumb.

Well,...after improving the technology connections ( fiber Optic instead of microwave they can get much better pictures.
Now if you are asking what do the pictures mean....not sure how to answer except...there is a lot happening out there.
Or if you are asking...what is a gravitional lense....Einstein predicted it...all I can say.

The quasar - short for quasi-stellar radio source - sprays out tremendous amounts of energy and matter, powered by a super-massive black hole at its heart.
Or the quasars themselves are ejecta, often in pairs with identical redshift, and sometimes in multiple successive pairs of decreasing redshift, along the minor axes of disturbed Seyfert galaxies.

The BBC title is poorly chosen since it’s not a double quasar.
