Maybe they became disoriented and beached themselves. Maybe they were trapped in a lagoon by a landslide or a storm. Maybe they died there over a period of a few millennia. But somehow, they ended up right next to one another, many just meters (yards) apart, entombed as the shallow sea floor was driven upward by geological forces and transformed into the driest place on the planet.
Today, they have emerged again atop a desert hill more than a kilometer (half a mile) from the surf, where researchers have begun to unearth one of the world's best-preserved graveyards of prehistoric whales.

Sudden flood, sudden receding of the waters. You just never know.
It was global warming and Republican policies that caused the air and water to be dirtier that killed them and it was also George Bush’s fault. Details on MSNBC. (sarcasm)
well duh, any whale in a desert is gonna die!
Here is another place where science confirms the flood.
Science shows that something very drastic happened between 3 and 8 thousand years ago. I believe that it is Noah’s flood that is displayed again and again by science.
Missippi Delta started forming in that time frame.
Niagra Falls began receeding in that time frame.
The oldest trees began growing within those boundaries.
The earliest recorded human history is within those limits.
Topsoil (average 8 inches) began then.
Many of earth’s deserts began forming at that time.
Most of the sediments in the ocean started between 4k and 8k years ago.
Dinosaur fossils in the artic died in that time frame (according to the presence of what was found in the bones.)
Human population began back in that time. (according to the average population growth stats.)
and on Science goes proving something very drastic began not long in the past.
May even be something like the Elephant’s graveyard phenomenon. It denies predators sustanence. Other species may also do that and reap similar evolutionary advantage.
As the Panama Canal is being expanded, they are finding fossils of elephants, camels, and horses to name a few.
Did they find my car keys? Lost them damn things ages ago.
Sunken might like this
why should it be any bigger mystery than finding fossilized fish and seashells on mountains???
We have that too here in Panama. I saw fossilized seashells with my own eyes in a local geology course I took. What happens is Panama continues to rise out of the sea And this was way up high on a hill above the canal.
“Did they find my car keys? Lost them damn things ages ago.”
LOL!!! I’ll start asking around.
Let’s see. In the Bible, in the book of Genesis there is mention of a lot of rain and a bit of flooding. Might that be the reason that when the flood dried, these little fishes were left there? Duh!
I hsve a basket full of fossil clams from central Texas, and think of those every time climate change is discussed.
The theory I like as to why it happens is that one ill or disoriented whale beaches and then his distress cries cause his fellow pod members to beach themselves coming to their fellows aid.
Thanks awfully old boy, bloody nuisance having to ask the wife for hers all the damn time.
