Two previously undiscovered pits have been found at Stonehenge which point to it once being used as a place of sun worship before the stones were erected.
The pits are positioned on celestial alignment at the site and may have contained stones, posts or fires to mark the rising and setting of the sun.
An international archaeological survey team found the pits as part of the Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project.
The team is using geophysical imaging techniques to investigate the site.
The archaeologists from the University of Birmingham and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection in Vienna have been surveying the subsurface at the landmark since summer 2010.

Digging some sun ping.
Here comes the sun
And I say, its all right...
Here’s my take on Stonehenge: A bunch of guys (probably adolescents) were sitting around smoking pot (or something similar) and they see a bunch of rocks laying around. One of them says, hey lets mess with the ancestors and put these rocks in a circle. And the rest as they say is history.
I wonder if they wore tunics while tanning, or whether they worshiped naked.
Thank you for sharing.
Next time, read up on the subject, and avoid looking like an idiot.
I know how about you laugh once in a while.

I thought it was funny. :’) Although, y’know, you said “ancestors” instead of “descendants”, thus nullifying the entire joke. /joke
I think it was a tavern. A meeting house. A Pub. What else would’ve been so important as to build it with huge stones? It was a place to gather and drink the local grog.
Then I am an idiot. :-)
Pub. Good answer.
The writer declares religion where there is actually science. The site was for celestial observation on a very sophisticated level and extremely practical use.
I visited stonehenge when I was in the navy. I’m still groggy.
Of COURSE they were worshipping the sun! Stonehenge is in ENGLAND! Rainy foggy England!
