Ten-year-old delivers new sister in family car on the way to hospital
While most 10-year-olds are out playing or doing other normal 10-year-old things, Stephanie Zamora was delivering a baby.
Stephanie, a fifth-grader at Arlington's South Davis Elementary School, helped deliver her new sister on the way to the hospital.
On Tuesday morning, her mother, Sandra Zamora, realized she was about to go into labor. Stephanie and her parents jumped in the car and headed to the hospital.
But the baby wasn't waiting. Her mother, who was in the backseat, remembers telling Stephanie, "Help me, please."
"I didn't know what to do because the baby was coming out, so, I just got the baby out," Stephanie said.
"Everything happened fast," Sandra Zamora.
Stephanie had quickly called 911. While waiting for an ambulance to arrive, she relayed and translated directions from the 911 operator to her Spanish-speaking parents.
The operator told her to put her new sister in her mother's arms and make sure the cord was not wrapped around the baby's neck.
On the 911 tapes, Stephanie can be heard saying "OK" to the operator and then translating to her parents in Spanish.
"My mom says, 'Well, at least you have a story to tell you sister,'" Stephanie said.
Stephanie, who wants to be a nurse when she grows up, has been telling the story to her friends.
"They say, 'Wow,'" Stephanie said.
Spanish speaking parents. Oh joy.
Yipee! Another “natural born citizen”. Perhaps in 35 years she’ll be President. Hell, it seems anybody can.
Mmmmm. She looks about 15.
Great Job Stephanie! You certainly came through for your mom and your new little sister. Good luck with your aspiration to be a part of the medical profession.
It’s no big deal that these people are immirants, but they have been here long enough that their daughter speak two languages and yet they still cannot speak English?
That just is not right.
Why haven’t they bothered to learn?
Because they don’t have to, we bend over backwards for them.
We put spanish on our telephones on our literature, and we don’t force them to speak the language of the country they live in.
Make English the official language, take away all of the spanish speaking phones and they will learn soon enough.
Looks like my granddaughter.
15? Are you nuts? And "Mmmmm", really? You sound like you're licking your chops! Gross!
Another anchor baby for this illegal couple. Parkland Hospital in Dallas delivers thousands of them every year, paid for by Uncle Sap’s tax drones. At least this delivery was cheaper than the others.
5th grade Daughter experienced early exposure to real life, now has baby sister. I am personally proud she could/would.
The rest is conjecture.
Some who don’t speak English are not here illegally. Others are. If you speak only a foreign language in the U.S. you are crippled.
Illegal immigration should not be tolerated, but nothing about that is stated here.
I know families who have been in the U.S. for generations who still speak German. Others like my mother, still speak “some” Swedish. There are German and Swedish communities that exist in Texas. Fact.
Children of immigrants often act as translators for the older members of the family. This is why we must teach in English at school. Typically, the adult immigrants only learn enough to get by; the children are bilingual; and, the grandchildren only speak English.
My mother told me that, when he oldest sister came home from school crying, because the children taunted her because she didn’t speak English, my grandfather said to the family (in Italian), from now on, we only speak English in this house. As much as he loved the culture of his country of birth, he loved this country and his children more.
Aw, look at the little darling. What a cute hat!
Even experienced mothers can be surprised at how quickly a baby is born. I’d have had my Kathleen in the emergency room lobby if a helpful staffer hadn’t turned up with a wheelchair, because I couldn’t walk any further!
She looks to be between 10 and 12 to me, which is the age range she really falls in. Where the he** do you get 15 out of that face?
Hey Krankor. The photo is of the DAUGHTER who helped the MOTHER deliver the baby. She is 10. Read the article, then comment, OK?
Way to go Steph. Nice job.
Yes, but I don’t see Home Depots and Lowe’s having to post English and German on everything.
I don’t see entire classes being taught in German in schools with angry illegals demanding their spawn be kowtowed to in their language.
I don’t see German translators at crime accident scenes where illegal unlicensed Germans take off for the border after slaughtering taxpaying Americans with their low riders while driving drunk.
“Some who dont speak English are not here illegally. Others are. If you speak only a foreign language in the U.S. you are crippled.”
In much of Texas if you don’t speak Spanish it’s not easy to get by either.
I understand your perspective, but you know that is not what I meant.
Have you ever been to Presidio TX? I have been in a hardware store there and watched conversations go from Spanish to German to English as if it was normal. (Local Menonite population in Ojinaga, Mexico) They are good people.
There is no reason to offer education in multiple languages. That is a mistake.
All non-English speakers are not subversive. The problem is those with divided loyalties.
There were Tejanos in Texas at the time of the Revolution, that fought at both the Alamo and San Jacinto. FACT. They were not like the La Raza (racist scum) today. La Raza would not have been tolerated then, with their Atzalon BS.
And some of my ancestors were born in TX during the Republic of Texas. My family has owned/lived one/farmed land in this county since 1889.
You are correct. But I lived in NM for 14 years and have very poor Spanish skills, but got along fine.
