Research from China and the US suggests that the innermost core of our planet has another, distinct region at its centre. The team believes that the structure of the iron crystals there are different from those found in the outer part of the inner core. The findings are reported in the journal Nature Geoscience. Without being able to drill into the heart of the Earth, its make-up is something of a mystery. So instead, scientists use echoes generated by earthquakes to study the core, by analysing how they change as they travel through the different layers of our planet. Prof Xiaodong Song, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign said: "The waves are bouncing back and forth from one side of the Earth to the other side of the Earth." Prof Song and his colleagues in China say this data suggests that the Earth's inner core - a solid region that is about the size of the Moon - is made up of two parts.

What is an “equatorial axis”?
The seismic wave data suggests that crystals in the "inner inner core" are aligned in an east-to-west direction - flipped on their side, if you are looking down at our planet from high above the North Pole.
The core, which lies more than 5,000km down, started to solidify about a billion years ago - and it continues to grow about 0.5mm each year.
Sounds like a bunch of super computer simulations, interpretations and guess-ta-mations going on there :)
The Equatorial Axis is the intersection of a sphere’s surface with the plane perpendicular to the sphere’s axis of rotation and midway between the poles.
Guess-ta-mations on a monumental scale. :)
Worked with sonic and ultrasonic equipment for an oilfield service company, the part about the core increasing 0.5mm every year kind of tickled me considering the depth of that measurement and the very indirect way they are measuring it.
:^)
You are describing a circle (intersection of the surface of a sphere with a plane), whereas the pictorial representation is not a circle, but a straight line intersecting the surface of the planet at two points: 9˚ south latitude, 91˚ east longitude and 9˚ north latitude, 89˚ west longitude. Since an "axis" is generally a line, and your explanation is at odds with the diagram provided by the authors, I suggest your post fails to explain the significance of this odd "axis".
Sounds like pimping for research dollars and tenure to me.
Somehow I think reading the composition of the Earth’s core from echoes of earthquakes is like reading the future from tea leaves.
There are vast amounts of gold, metals, and diamonds just a thousand miles away. Unfortunately we have a far easier time reaching Mars 50 million miles away than reaching Earth’s core.
That is similar to the first thing that went through my head when I heard the report on the radio this morning. :)
The term W-A-G comes to mind.
(Wild-Assed-Guess).
Thanks to Algore, we all know now that it’s millllyons and millllyons degrees down there too.
Not nearly that precise.
Let’s see....
The equatorial axis of the Earth is 9 degrees.
The elliptic of the planets relative to the Sun is 9 degrees.
Uh...ya...no Creator....just an accident.
Noooo. The Chinese are tunneling through the earth to invade. Maybe they’ll poke through at a housing project site and run away.
I don’t see the Shire and all the Hobbits.
