'Screaming nightmare': William Shatner boldly goes into VR
The Guardian ^ | August 31, 2018

As Captain Kirk in Star Trek, William Shatner took us to places “where no man has gone before”, with stories that foreshadowed the invention of the mobile phone and tablet computers. Now, in real life, the actor is exploring virtual reality – but he wants the entertainment industry to be aware of its potential detrimental impact on vulnerable minds.

Shatner told the Guardian: “The use of technology to affect our minds is so powerful now that we need to be on guard in the future.”

He is involved with Ziva Dynamics, a VR company, through which he has experienced “nightmarish footage” involving strange creatures that creep up on the user.

“It’s so real: it’s the stuff of nightmares … We’ve got to be really careful because you could put somebody into a psychosis,” he said.

My first husband could’ve been Shatner’s twin.

I can go up and down a few stairs with no problem. It’s the ones that lead to a 2nd story that bother me.

I like WS in a lot of ways but he is NOT good to his ex or soon to be ex wives.

You are lucky you weren’t married to the REAL Shatner.

For all the mocking of Mr. Shatner we see in social media, he is actually a pretty smart guy and a good/great actor. Do know people who know him, and they respect him.

Twitter (those leftist jerks) took some shots at Mr Shatner and succeeded in harming him. But Mr. Shatner mostly ignored them and stood by his craft.

I don’t know his politics, and that’s the way it should be. Respect him for his talent and skill. The Star Trek universe would not exist but for him, Leonard Nimoy (may his soul reside in Heaven), and DeForest Kelly. (Sorry for typos, my iPhone is being a real pain.)

So you’re saying that you accidentally responded to a second story from where you intended?

Shatner is a great guy. I remember hearing a story about him faking a heart attack at a paintball-shooting game. He shot the opposing team when they, in total shock, came to check on him; all this in the spirit of the Kobiyashi Maru.

Seems like a bit of reverse psychology to me.

Remember the computer in the TV? All you had to do was say “computer” and it would listen to you and respond. Now we have Echo and Alexa, etc.

Science Fiction of today is science fact of tomorrow.

There’s a great YouTube with will wheaton and he talks about meeting Shatner for the first time.

Let’s just say it didn’t go well and Shatner was reprimanded by gene roddenberry. Worf wanted to kick his ass.

Then you obviously have never had the ‘pleasure’ of viewing his very first movie-LOL! But,in his defense-he did get much better over time. Back before I quit the boob tube, I actually liked him in Boston Legal...

I recently got an Apple Watch for a birthday gift. It’s the Dick Tracy 2-way wrist radio of a 1960s childhood brought to life.

We are living in the future!

He's Jewish. Interesting discovery for me a couple of years ago. Always knew that Nemoy was Jewish and that copied the Vulcan hand sign from a Jewish ritual.
