For Larger Customers, Eating Out Is Still a Daunting Experience
NY Times ^ | 3/12/2019 | Kim Severson

Rebecca Alexander’s worst experience dining while large happened just after she nailed a promotion at a nonprofit organization.

She took her staff, and her new boss, to lunch at a promising downtown restaurant in Portland, Ore., where she lives. As the hostess led the group to a booth, Ms. Alexander, a 31-year-old who wears a size 30, knew in an instant there was no way she was going to squeeze into it.

“I remember having this out-of-body experience,” she said. “I watched myself sit down and try to get in even though I knew the space was too small, because I so needed it to fit.” Defeated, she asked for a table. The hostess told her there would be a half-hour wait.

“The cherry on top was that I got to be the reason we had to stand around for 30 minutes,” she said.

For people who identify as large, plus-size or fat, dining out can be a social and physical minefield. Chairs with arms or impossibly small seats leave marks and bruises. Meals are spent in pain, or filled with worry that a flimsy chair might collapse.

IHOPs are notorious for their narrow booths.
Most IHOPS are in a small dining area to begin with. They tend to jam a lot of tables a booths into this small space.
Maybe they think we the customer sees this as ‘cozy’.
I see it as too close to other diners.
Close enough to hear them smacking their pork saugages.

Put down the groceries, girl. The time to get a handle on your weight is when you’re only a few pounds overweight, not when you 300 or 400 pounds.

Lose some weight Fatso! Fat slobs like you cause problems for people other than you. I do not believe in “fat acceptance.” I believe that sloth and gluttony are two of the seven deadly sins. Obese people should be charged by the pound when being seated in theatres, restaurants, and airplanes.

For people who identify as large, plus-size or fat

The term we're looking for, kids, is "morbidly obese".

Why couldn't the booth identify as a table?

Yes. Thank you. And she very definitiely has a problem. It won't be solved by making bigger chairs, or telling her she's OK the way she is. This isn't "tubby" ... this is extremely unhealthy.

Are there any TGIF’s anywhere anymore?

Only went to one once. Years ago. The food was adequate. As any chain restaurant food is.

But the tables! They were inches apart.

I hate being able to (forced to) listen to conversations from other tables. Especially tables 2 and 3 tables from mine.

I never went back.

Whatever the case, someone as heavy as she is, is at much higher risk of numerous health problems.

There are various ways of losing weight. Not all work for everyone, but she really should be encouraged to look into it, for her own personal health.
