For Larger Customers, Eating Out Is Still a Daunting Experience
NY Times ^ | 3/12/2019 | Kim Severson

Rebecca Alexander’s worst experience dining while large happened just after she nailed a promotion at a nonprofit organization.

She took her staff, and her new boss, to lunch at a promising downtown restaurant in Portland, Ore., where she lives. As the hostess led the group to a booth, Ms. Alexander, a 31-year-old who wears a size 30, knew in an instant there was no way she was going to squeeze into it.

“I remember having this out-of-body experience,” she said. “I watched myself sit down and try to get in even though I knew the space was too small, because I so needed it to fit.” Defeated, she asked for a table. The hostess told her there would be a half-hour wait.

“The cherry on top was that I got to be the reason we had to stand around for 30 minutes,” she said.

For people who identify as large, plus-size or fat, dining out can be a social and physical minefield. Chairs with arms or impossibly small seats leave marks and bruises. Meals are spent in pain, or filled with worry that a flimsy chair might collapse.

Writing as someone who was a fat little kid and now a few years from retirement, weighs what he weighed in fifth grade and has been on a diet for almost 50 years:

“It’s not as simple as calories in, calories out.”

Perhaps not, but that’s a darned good part of it. Had I not made a major course correction, I doubt if I would have seen 45.

Some friendly advice ...

NEVER go into the kitchen of a place where you like to eat.

It is wrong to remark about someones weight. Remember walk a mile in their shoes. There but for the grace of God go I.

I was always thin and fit until an illness took hold. It has been an eye-opening experience. People I have known for years have made the most brazen and startling comments to me and to others behind my back. You don't really know people until the chips are down.

Not that I find it easy to put chips down once I've opened the bag.

You know you’re fat when you throw a base ball and instead of hitting the ground it goes into orbit around you.

“Larger customers.” You mean “fat people.” Let’s create yet another soft-selling (read “lying”) euphemism to insulate people from the consequences of their own actions and deny the realities.

“Speaking as a fat #### :), I must say it is inherently unfair that our moral weaknesses show while drug addicts and smokers and alcoholics and even PSYCHOTICS can HIDE what they are, to some extent at least“

Usually, those are “found” in caskets before their natural time.

Are you eating the same amount of calories in other foods as opposed to the pasta, pizzas, ice cream?

She took her staff, and her new boss, to lunch

The cow was the one planning it and she couldn't even do that job right? Sounds like they need to fire her and get someone competent for the job.

“For people who identify as large, plus-size or fat”

There is no “identify.” You either are or you aren’t.

MAYBE THEN FAT PEOPLE NEED TO PLAN AHEAD AS TO WHAT PLACES CAN ACCOMODATE THEIR AMPLE FRAMES AND GIRTHS.

A half hour wait isn’t the end of the world, either.

Its a minor freaking first world problem.

She’s so fat that when they handed her the menu she looked at it and said, “That will be fine.”

She’s a woman with a problem

That's exactly what she is. And she needs to deal with the problem, not demand that the world bend to accommodate it. Nor does the world need to be virtue-shamed by the New York Times into accepting her pathology.
