We Need Worms

You might think they are disgusting. But our war against intestinal worms has damaged our immune systems and mental health.

Did you ever wonder why one in six children has a mental health disorder? One in every six seems to be a few too many, I would think. Did you ever wonder why 20 per cent of women, in the United States at least, have been diagnosed with depression after menopause, and why ‘chronic fatigue syndrome’ has mysteriously emerged? Why should almost half of us be allergic to something? Why should more than four in every 10 children be on medication for a chronic condition? Why do more than one in 10 women have an autoimmune condition? When asking why we get sick, we take the first step in understanding the origins of disease. If we find the answer to that question, we become empowered to prevent disease. ...

.... What if our bias against a handful of helminths led us to slaughter billions of innocent and even helpful worms? Indeed, my research and the research of many others tell us that helminths are necessary for our health. A barrage of scientific evidence points toward helminths as being important regulators of immune function. Because of this, our genocidal campaign against intestinal worms apparently has a very nasty backlash that nobody saw coming. But science moves very slowly. All helminths are still labelled as parasites in textbooks, despite the fact that we now know this to be incorrect.

Nobody loves me
Everybody hates me
Going to the garden to eat worms
Big fat juicy ones
Tiny little squiggly ones
Watch them wriggle and squirm

Bite their heads off
Suck their juice out
Throw their skins away
I don’t see how birds can live on
Worms three times a day

The first one was easy,
the second one was queasy,
The third one got caught in my throat.
Big fat juicy worms, slip slop slimy worms, fuzzy wuzzy little worms

Nobody loves me
Everybody hates me
Going to the garden to eat worms
Long thin slimy ones
Short fat juicy ones
Gooey, gooey, gooey, gooey, worms

Long thin slimy ones slip down easily
Short fat juicy ones stick
Short fat juicy ones stick between your teeth
And the juice goes slurp, slurp, slurp

The numbers are probably worse. They just took trannys off the crazy list.

I have held the theory for many years that the current state of auto-immune problems growing epidemic is due to modern living which suffers both from lack of significant exposure to immune challenges as well as a lack of complex phyto-nutrients and micro-flora (well before pro-biotics and pre-biotics entered the common advertising sphere) but I would have a hard time signing on to the taking on some of the parasites mentioned which are not traditionally considered symbiotic. Granted, there may be some complex interplay between their presence and many of the other internal-flora and ecology of the biochemistry that results, but don’t ask me to guinnea pig those experiments

This is nothing new, but usually relegated to fringe sites.

Anyone desiring more info can search the key words.

However...that stated...helminths are not the magical solution alone as the author purports.

It is merely one piece to the puzzle and the author misses the mark by a wide margin...but she’s asking the right questions and I’m impressed as hell.

Germs and bacteria are good for you, they build your immune system. Avoiding them at all costs leads to big problems down the road.

So let your kids play in dirt.

I have long thought this to be true. We live in such a sterilized society (though not as sterile as some people want to believe)

Also, the huge increase in things characterized as mental disorders. Of course, they removed Homosexuality and Transgenderism, but the influx has been likely far greater.

I can see ground worms, they loosen the soil, but intestinal worms only cause problems.

I grew up in the tropics, had a few encounters with parasites during that time. Not sure it helped my mental state, every time I see the news, I think I must be crazy.

Read the entire article. Ends with a thud. The author says the big pharmaceuticals are not interested in curing people's ills. Now that is a hard pill to swallow...along with the worms.

I’ve always heard having dogs and or cats around young children is good, as it strengthens the immune system.
Later on, mineral concentrates such as Acidophilus can help build up good bacteria in the tummy, where food is broken down into chemicals.

It wouldn’t be the worms, but the bacteria in the gut of the worm that may have some benefit. The worms themselves are just parasites carrying other parasites.

Well, they might help if you are constipated. If they can loosen the soil, they can loosen the stool!
