Spanish Stonehenge revealed: 5,000-year-old megalithic temple

A 5,000-year-old monument has reappeared in Spain after being submerged at the bottom of a reservoir for 50 years.

The megalithic site features 144 granite blocks which stand more than six-foot tall and has been dubbed 'Spanish Stonehenge'.

Its similarity to the UNESCO World heritage site in Wiltshire is striking, but the Iberian version is made of smaller rocks.

It was thought to be condemned to the history books in the 1960s when a Spanish general ordered the construction of a hydroelectric dam in Peraleda de la Mata, near Cáceres in Extremadura.

“Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” . Comes to mind.

Penny : Well, we need that ring.
Ulysses : Well that ring is at the bottom of a pretty durn big lake.
Penny : Uh-uh.
Ulysses : A 9,000 hectare lake.
Penny : I don't care if it's 90,000...
Ulysses : But honey...
Penny : That lake was not my doing.
Ulysses : Of course not honey...
Penny : I counted to three, honey.
Ulysses : No, wait, honey! Finding one little ring in the middle of all that water is one hell of a heroic task!

Good find! I didn’t realize they were that widespread that early.

Thank you.

The sunkeniv deserves the moniker for this one!

Well, now is the time to complete a 360 degree, full-scale laser scan of every stone. It will not disturb any stone, and will allow complete re-study and examination at leisure later - even when the lake has refilled.

By the way, granite is NOT subject to “erosion”, nor is it affected when submerged in “stagnant water” as in a freshwater lake. The author is repeating exaggerated claims by “someone” connected to the site.

Compared to the deliberate vandalism and incidental wear by tens of thousands of visitors on an open air site? These stones are far, far safer underwater than on the surface exposed to the “care” that deliberately destroyed ancient cities and temples in Turkey, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Seems like that graphic needs to be updated. There are megalithic structures also in Asia Minor, the Levant, the Canary Islands, and in the Americas as well.

My first visit to Stonehenge you could actually walk among the stones and touch them. Even with today’s restrictions, it’s well worth a visit.
