I’ve been Type II for almost 25 years. Even when I was rail thin, I could only barely keep it under control. I packed on some weight after I got staph infections in my lower legs that reduced my mobility and deepened the neuropathy, and I’ve tried to stay on keto diets, but it’s too damn difficult.

Fasting is a form of calorie reduction. When you reduce calorie intake you start surviving on your own visceral fat meaning it turns into a ketogenic diet.

You might as well go onto a ketogenic diet, and not skip meals.

Fasting is not necessarily about weight loss as much as Autophagy promotion.

"How to renew your body: Fasting and autophagy"

Intermittent fasting permits a minimum of autophagy daily. Three meals a day is a promotor of metabolic derangement. I don't like the all calories are equal philosophy. Each has their own hormonal changes and conversion efficiency. There is more than ample time in a six hour window to provide for ones energy requirements, hence the calories in and calories out (CINCO) is correct. CINCO, however fails to address the complexity of human metabolism in regards to autophagy.

I’m 74, follow intermittant dieting 16/8, moderate low carb but definitely no sugar or root veggies or bread/grains/ or corn. Just got my lab work Tuesday.

- A1C 5.6, glucose 83, total cholesterol is 131, triglyc. is 67, hdl is 47, ldl is 71. I’m still overweight!

Took me about two days to adjust to the 16 hr fasting but now I like it. I believe in the low carb diet and family helps me stick to it by cooking/buying right foods.

I go to Sr Center twice wk for hr of easy exercise - mainly stretching all muscle groups.

Fasting is not calorie-reduction, you still get your calories in. However when combined with the Keto diet, you simply are not hungry, and it’s easy to eat within your eating window.

It’s fairly easy to make Keto-friendly sweets, using sugar-substitutes.

I regularly make treats using 100% Cacao powder (get the ‘Dutched’ kind if you can, more Potassium), Swerve Confectionary, and Heavy Whipping Cream (diluted with water). I like to take those, throw in some frozen Strawberries and Frozen Avocado pieces, and make a nice ice-cream like Fat Bomb.

The key is overcoming Insulin Resistance, Keto is the best way over time to reduce Insulin Resistance.

Dr. Berg said it best, “You don’t lose weight to get healthy, you get healthy to lose weight”, and before you can lose weight, you’ve got to reduce Insulin Resistance, and depending on your situation, it can take awhile, but with Keto and IF, you’ll get there much faster than any other way.

The body wants to try to retain fat as much as possible, even if you don’t eat a lot of calories. You have to fool your body into using those fat stores. Calorie-restriction alone won’t do it. Keto and IF is all about forcing your body to use the fat stores for energy, even when you are eating close to your recommended number of calories per day.

The idea is to run a slight caloric deficit, so that you lose about a pound of FAT per week. (I emphasize FAT, here because many times weight loss isn’t necessarily the amount of fat lost, but it could be muscle and water, and you don’t want to lose muscle). In fact, studies show that Fasting actually creates Human Growth Hormone (HGH) which helps to preserve muscle in the body.

It’s important to note that not all fats are equal.

You want Omega-3s, from Fish, Nuts, these are anti-inflammatory, also try to eat Grass-Finished meats when possible.

Omega-6s are more inflammatory, these come from your plant-oils, like Canola Oil, stay away from those.

That’s the one. What I found interesting was that it can help the body self-regulate and bring itself back to state of balance.

Of course, that means I’d need to give up sweet tea, and that’s a problem.

True, but incomplete. There are ways of eating that encourage increased out put and ways that encourage reducing input. A bad diet causes the person to suffer increased hunger that makes reducing input difficult and causes the metabolism to slow down and reduce output.

Discipline and sacrifice are always needed but there are ways to reduce the difficulty.

Yeah...I do worry about that. My numbers came out good the last doctor visit several weeks back. But I know I should be careful.

I know Keto.

If done properly brown adipose tissue increase as well as the basal metabolic rate (BMR). That is with an equal caloric diet. This mouse model holds for humans too:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3821007/

Secondary to adipose adaption is the importance of skeletal muscle maintenance. Both effect BMR directly.

The ketogenic diet also stops muscle loss and resulting sarcopenia.

Targeting thermogenesis in brown fat and muscle to treat obesity and metabolic disease

A calorie in and a calorie out fails when applied to human metabolism. The time and type of calories are most important.
