‘I never felt like I belonged in the U.S.,’ says 62-year-old who fled to Bali

At age 60, she wasn’t entirely sure where Bali was. By age 62, she was living there.

Sherry Bronson, now 69, spent much of her life in Minnesota, where she raised three daughters and worked in real estate. But she didn’t love it: “I have hated the weather in Minnesota since I was a child,” she says. So in 2010, when her oldest daughter, who was teaching in South Korea, asked her to come to Bali so they could celebrate Sherry’s 60th birthday together, Sherry — after, she recalls with a laugh, Googling “Where’s Bali?” — jumped at the chance.

It didn’t disappoint: “The first thing that struck me as I got off the plane was the air — it was chewable, humid and warm with a scent of incense,” she says. “It was sweet and spicy and magical.” The next morning, she awoke to roosters crowing and the swooshing sound of a woman sweeping flower petals that had fallen in the night.

I spent two weeks at a 5 star hotel in Bali, and even at that high priced place, they couldn't keep the humidity from causing the 'rain' from internal rooms.

When she said it was 'chewable' she was talking about the air.

Take a shower, put on fresh clothing, step out side, and you are going to be soaked within minutes, from your own sweat.

It is beautiful, BUT...

Good for her. But Bali wouldn’t be my choice. The local bars seem to blow up an awful lot down there.

She didn't know where Bali was at age 60? I know where it is at age 17...I say BS...

Let's see, I guess she was the liberal who said she will leave if Trump won... 😀

If she felt that she never belonged in the United States, it is best that she left.I, for damn sure would never stay where I felt I did not belong.

I envy her for the gumption to pack up and make that move. I love the hot tropics and if it weren’t for the activities I enjoy here that are not available abroad, I’d move in a second.

We moved from the Southern CA Coast to MS.

Same Climate without the Moving Expenses, Ocean Views, Restaurants and fun loving Tropical Atmosphere.

But we do have something she doesn’t, Family Dollar and Super Walmart’s that still sell Rifles.. #;^)

“After 5 divorces, thank God and Greyhound she’s gone.”
Bet she thinks none of the divorces are her fault. Sounds like she’s the common denominator.

Well, I suppose she could have ended up living alone in a tiny house with fifty cats.

I am not seeing a reason to bash her. She fell in love with Bali and never fit in in the USA. Hey, I have never felt like I fit in the USA either. I mean, I love the USA — best nation on the planet — and I would NEVER leave her, but socially I never felt like I fit in. That is not enough to drive me away.

It sounds like that was not enough to drive her from the USA either, if she didn’t move until 62 years old. So she fell in love with Bali and loves it? So what? Good for her. There are many US expats all left for various reasons. She fell in love with a place, moved, and has no regrets. Good for her.

I don’t see the reason for bashing her. OK, I do. Nobody reads the articles. They just post after reading a title, and the title implies she is some disgruntled American basher. I didn’t read anything of the sort in the article. It seems she just fell in love with the country.

Good for her. She is not hurting anybody. I wouldn’t do it, but the freedom of America means you can move wherever you want to.

She said you can live comfortably in Bali on $36,000 per year. That is poverty level in San Francisco or Manhattan. Even if all she has is SS, it is probably enough for her to live well in Bali. That is always a major draw for Expats.

I mean, 15 year lease on a home for $60,000. That is $300/month to rent a home. Good luck with that in America outside of the hood.

She said health care and summer weather sucks. She acknowledged some downsides in the article. It is not like she is a prisoner and nothing said she renounced her US citizenship. As long as she keeps up her passport (and she does visit family in the USA), she can always come back for serious healthcare, or even move back to the USA if she gets a significant illness or injury.

Also, she looks like an exceptionally healthy 69 year old to me, so I am not seeing a ton of advanced health care need for her for another 10 or 15 years.

Family Dollar

There's a Dollar General real close to me that I've never shopped in till yesterday.

This past weekend I got a craving for sardines in Louisiana hot sauce but it's no longer carried in my local Meijer store.

So I went on line to the Bumble Bee Beach Cliff Sardines website to see where they are sold and darn if the Dollar General didn't have them. So I went up there and bought a few for a dollar each, which was less than half of what I used to pay for them.

Personally, Texas is the only place I’ve ever lived in the US that felt something akin to ‘home’

I've spent my entire life here in Michigan and if there's one thing that keeps me here is the ever changing seasons and the fact that I can't afford to move where I would like to.

With that being said, I spent my growing up years in northern Michigan where everything was available to me. Summer water sports on the lake, little league baseball, changing of the colors and hunting in the fall, skiing in the winter the opening of trout fishing in the spring.

The only place that ever came close to being home was when I was stationed in Panama while in the Army from 69 - 72. Hot weather year around, beaches, a motor cycle for transportation.........It was paradise at that time in my life.

Then life got in the way.......LOL!

I can totally understand visiting an exotic locale and falling in love with the place. Happened to me three and a half years ago and I’ve thought about it literally every day since getting back home. would love to return for a vacation, sure, but also as a place to live perhaps 6 months out of the year.

Nice story. I am happy for her. We only live for so long, especially as we get older that comes into focus. May as well have fun, as much as you can afford. And if there are chains that have been holding you back, that you can afford to then cut. Cut them and try something different. Better than dying in boredom and mediocrity .
