At least at Darlington, there is some amount of driver skill necessary but at tracks like Daytona and Talladega, they might as well let the "drivers" control the cars from atop the grandstands where the spotters usually do their work.
The drivers are not much more than passengers anyway at those tracks. They just mash their foot to the floorboard and hope some other driver doesn't send them into the crowd.
