When did indoor air become cold and clean?
Air conditioning is one of those inventions that have become so ubiquitous, that many in the developed world don’t even realize that less than a century ago, it didn’t exist. Indeed, it wasn’t so long ago that the air inside our buildings and the air outside of them were one and the same, with occupants powerless against their environment.
Eric Dean Wilson, in his just published book, “After Cooling: On Freon, Global Warming, and the Terrible Cost of Comfort,” dives deep into the history of this field. It took more than just inventing the air conditioner to make people want to buy it. In fact, whole social classes outright rejected the technology for years. It took hustle, marketing skill, and mass societal change to place air conditioning at the center of our built environment.
Wilson covers that history, but he has a more ambitious agenda: to get us to see how our everyday comforts affect other people. Our choice of frigid cooling emits flagrant quantities of greenhouse gas emissions, placing untold stress on our planet and civilization. Our pursuit of comfort ironically begets us more insecurity and ultimately, less comfort.

.....as he writes from his air conditioned office drinking an iced latte, saving this tripe on servers cooled by massive air conditioners... How will Nasty Pelosi keep her $20,000 worth of ice cream cold?
He obviously doesn’t live in the south
No, it doesn't. That is the very reason Freon was replaced.
NPC programming update - air conditioning is the evil becuz climate change.
The “progressives” all want us living back in the mud and eating ants like primitive apes for the planet.
No, I'll pass on the book for now. I may reconsider if there is a serious toilet paper shortage.
Turn off the AC to the Google server farms first.
Gives “molṑn labé” a whole new meaning.
The left wants to get rid of air conditioning to kill more people.
Followed by every state, city, county and federal government offices!
I have it on as seldom as possible. Even on the hottest days, I'm to be found out on my porch in the humid, sultry air reading a book and sipping on iced tea. I especially like it towards evening when the fireflies, crickets and tree frogs come out.
It’s not about pollution or saving the planet. It’s about the enslavement of the planet. The 1% ruling over 99%. The new royalty vs. the new peasants.
What an unadulterated load of crap.
To do so, we’ll have to re-orient ourselves to the meaning of air-conditioning. And to comfort. Privatized air-conditioning survived the ozone crisis, but its power to separate—by class, by race, by nation, by ability—has survived, too. Comfort for some comes at the expense of the life on this planet. It’s time we become more comfortable with discomfort. Our survival may depend on it.
Not discomfort: Life-saving cooling - In 2003, in France, 14,802 died in a heatwave, almost exclusively due to a lack of air conditioning. Imagine the same here.
I'm writing this from Southern California where the temps are in the mid-90's for days on end.
Go first, Yahoo and Time - turn off your a/c and show us how it's done. Do it at your homes as well, otherwise you are hypocrites.
Anyone who criticizes air conditioning should be required to live in Death Valley or Phoenix...then tell me it’s a bad thing.
It will also be considered racist if they don’t have it.
Or if they live in a home, rent or are homeless.
Everything white people do is considered racist.
How far will it go? Consider how a recent event may yet be described be the Woke: Not too long ago a racist white person tried to break up two girls fighting and a young antiracist came out of no where and prevented him from engaging in further racism with a shot to the head.
Back in the mid eighties I was listening to public TV as a couple of Senators argued about policy. There have been several attempts using policy to get rid of air conditioning. The several changes of the cooling agent, Freon being the one in question here, were made, not for Global Warming, but to increase the cost of ownership. One pompous ass of a Senator, pounding the table, said, “We can’t allow every Tom, Dick, and Harry to have air conditioning. We’ve got to stop it.” I was so angry I had to stop and catch my breath. Without air conditioning we’d have to simply abandon whole states. And, what about the elderly? Every time there’s a power failure during a heat wave elderly people die. I am willing to bet that Senator has spent a lifetime in regal comfort.
My parents had a Sears central air unit that was still working when we sold their house some thirty years later. I paid around $900 for my first unit back in the early eighties. The ones for my rental units are about $10,000. And, being Chinese, they often fail several times during a year’s time. Every time I go to do major work on one the cooling agent for it has been outlawed and costs $400-500 to refill.
Because I know all this Global baloney is intended to raise the cost, I’m very angry.
Incidentally, there’s an underground of illegal sales, installations and repairs. The laws have made it as profitable as smuggling cigarettes. There are signs up at suppliers calling on people to report illegal sales and service. This happens anytime the government gets involved to artificially raise prices, whatever their purpose.
Send him to the Central African Republic where he can live in a mud hut.
That’s where I draw the line...
But they would still be able to vote for Biden, right?
