It is possible to buy the coffee used by the U.S. Navy? Is there such a thing as Navy Coffee?

I like drinking coffee and I keep an eye out for new good brands to try. Over the years I've come across references (such as in a Tom Clancy or in a Mitch Rapp novel) to "navy coffee". Apparently it is served at the White House unless the Biden administration has deemed it to be racist.

Is there actually a specific type of coffee used by the U.S. Navy? Is it something available for purchase for the public?

I'm also curious what kinds of coffee people here drink. I'm not interested in anything that is 'fair trade", anti-GMO or 'organic".

I agree. I drink Maxwell House Original and clean the Mr. Coffee type pot with vinegar when the clean light comes on. The only thing I am a coffee snob about is I like a splash of whole cream. No sweetener.

The licensed rum of the British Navy was Pusser’s Rum (a corruption of the word Purser, who would dispense said rum.)

It is still made, and is not the best rum out there, but most often consumed for sentimental reasons.

As far as coffee goes, I am partial to “cowboy camp coffee”, which was said to encourage hair growth, or if you already have hair, to make it fall out.

Let’s see, i left active duty in 1981. Things might have changed a little. My memory serves me, i like my navy coffee just like my woman, hot, strong and black! Seriously, navy coffee is not so much a brand as a style. If your coffee maker recomends two scoops, double it, now you have navy coffee. PS navy coffee also removes paint when needed.

I’ve been using the stuff from Dollar Tree, Cafe el Morro. 6 oz for a dollar, fine ground, makes a good cup of black stuff. Cheapest I can find too. Label says Puerto Rico.

2nd choice, the generic brand Dollar General sells, can’t remember what brand, but it’s not bad either. I used Community for a long time, but it’s just too expensive these days.

I use a french press coffee maker, and put some heavy cream in the cup before I pour. That way you don’t dirty a spoon, pouring stirs it. Called Cafe Au Lait in south Louisiana. (Coffee with milk.)

Navy coffee is just what post #3 said, label just says coffee, whatever they get cheap and in bulk same as everything else. Coffee, ground, 3 lb, QTY 12...thats about all the info you get from the label on the case. typical military labeling system.

Dump an unspecified amount into a coffee urn 2 feet tall, boil it for around 45 minutes, and don’t let anyone touch it for 18 hours...helps to use bilge water, then you only have to let it steep 5 or 6 hours...but on 12-4AM stern watch it’ll keep you awake...if nothing else, trying to get that nasty aftertaste to go away...ok it’s not quite that bad, but after it sits in that urn for 45 minutes you have to wrestle it to get your spoon back...

I have an old Keck straight razor, military issue, interchangeable blades. Similar label...

razor, one,
part no. xxxx-xxx

and so forth. Still in the cellophane wrapper, never opened. I’d have to pull it out to quote the exact label, but that’s a pretty close approximation of all their labeling. Case of 24 marked the same except for quantity. Coffee would be labeled the same. Usually with food, no brand name, brown label saying COFFEE...RICE...OATS...FLOUR...and the weight.

Isn’t it the same coffee as you’d buy at the store, except 10x the price under a government contract? Do you really want to pay extra?

In my 69 years, I have tried all the national brands, and since living in Louisiana for over a decade, do declare the Community Coffee brand, and the cafe’, hotel, breakfast, and americano blends very nice.

For those who prefer stout coffee, their french roast should do. It is much too dark for my stomach.

was more about the coffee maker and coffee mugs than the coffee itself.

It's a system. Change any one part of it an you get something completely different.

uhhhh... Navy coffee is not good coffee. As someone posted before, we use to march to a cadence, “They say that in the Navy, the coffee’s mighty fine. It looks like muddy water and tastes like turpentine”.

The USS Enterprise had starboard joes, and that was mostly sugar. We use to load up our ship cards and buy a “round” for everyone is the EOS (Enclosed Operating Space). If you were lucky, your watch officer would buy a round.

Most of the time, I’d buy a case of Monster and keep it in the extra rack to drink when you had the short rotation on watch.

Mostly drink Great Value brand from Walmart. They have three main varieties: They all are acceptable. It depends what they have in stock. I like the Colombian and Donut Shop best.

It's been a long time, but, I recall that when making a pot of our coffee on the ship we would put a ‘pinch of salt’ into the grounds (only when underway). The reason was the water distilled from the evaporators was really pure. (Well, unless we had plane guard earlier and the bird farm was pumping bilges and our intake managed to suck up some DFM or av gas.)

Oh God, I had forgotten pulling OOD on the 4-8 watch. What was called coffee had been brewing for over half a day. It would keep you awake but was nothing I ever wrote home about.

Grateful for the Seabee shout out- having been one myself for 20 yrs - BUC (SCW)

The best coffee I had was when we kicked over a generator during Field Exercise in the wee morning hours and started up two coffee makers in an open field.

The coffee wasn’t even finished brewing, but the pot was 2/3 empty in no time at all. Mostly a weak, tea looking substance. By the time I got my cup, she was damned near empty but super dark. Best coffee I ever chewed!

The best I ever had was made in a very large commercial coffee percolator.

Large percolators are NOT the preferred way to brew coffee ("traditional percolation also tends toward creating bitter and overextracted coffee" seriouseats.com/coffee-history-the-percolator-how-it-works-history).

Perhaps it is a coffee comfort food thing. While working at Pratt and Whitney, I actually acquired a taste for some of the worst coffee in the world ... vending machine coffee (the cheap Brazilian coffee is pulverized so it acts like instant coffee). But a cup of vending machine coffee at P & W along with some vending machine Drake's Sunny Doodles and I had a well-balanced breakfast.

"Working For the Navy as a civilian for 31 years what I saw was more about the coffee maker and coffee mugs than the coffee itself......as in it is sacrilege to ever clean either one."

Woe betide the sailor foolish enough to clean the pot. The air would literally turn blue from the chewing out from the Chief.
