Make sure the first charge was not a hold. This is what happens if you check into a hotel with a debit card.
You should be charged the day and time the product was shipped, not when you ordered it.
Perhaps there is a screw-up at Amazon, putting a hold but not taking it off as the package was shipped.
It’s like going to the gas pump and inserting your debit card, there will be a merchant hold for said amount of dollars. Then when the correct amount is known and charged the merchant hold will be removed.
You shouldn’t be using a Debit Card Online.
You should only use Secure Credit Cards Online.
I don’t understand why anyone would use a Debit Card st anytime!
I have yet to understand the rationale behind using debit cards. A credit card offers much more protection, and you don’t have to worry about overdrafts, or worse yet, your account being cleaned out. I know someone who had their checking account cleaned out. He uses credit cards now.
I have always had the policy to never use a debit card for online purchases. Ever. If they overcharge you they have your money right out of your account, there is no credit card company with a stake in it that you can complain to about fraud and the bank doesn’t care, has no skin in the game and will just say “Can you prove it wasn’t legit? We have no way, your word against theirs” and do nothing.
I use Amazon here and there. I do not have Amazon Prime. I use a debit card but check it right away to make sure it is correct. However I noticed in the past few months its harder and herder to order without me getting an email that states: “Thanks for joining Amazon Prime!” I did no such thing. I have to get back in and cancel it. This happened to me twice already. Amazon sucks.
But you won't.
I made the mistake of getting an Amazon card (for the discount) and leaving it in the Amazon wallet.
My account was hacked (inside job) and a laptop ordered and delivered to an address I never used.
Amazon said it was ordered by phone. I had never made an order by phone.
Amazon INSISTED I had made the order. Fortunately Chase reversed the charge but I still get calls from Amazon trying to get me to pay.
This is why I never use a debit card
Be sure you did not get hacked!
Never trust anyone on the phone trying to get into your account by asking you for paswords!
This happened to me ( sounded asian; but I refused to do this over the phone, and reported it as phishing
Using a checking debit card on line?
No thank you!

I no longer OWN debit account. My son was a life-guard & the thief was able to empty his checking account. At least, with a credit card his financial exposure is limited to $50.
I think one of the selling points of getting a Debit Card is that even if your credit history is not great, you can still obtain a Debit Card. I had a few years of hassle with paying off my student loan, and later with Lois Lerner’s IRS for unpaid taxes.
After years of postponing out of habit, I changed, I sort of grew up and I was ready to start over. My credit is good now. No more Artful Dodger games of not paying my bills.
We’ve never used a debit card because people we know have had their bank account hacked as a result of it.
Have never had a problem with Amazon in relation to our credit card on file.
BTW, my sis found out that when returning an item to Amazon you can no longer just drop it off at UPS to pack and send. You must box it up before dropping it at UPS.
I rarely use Amazon.
The goal is to remove current Credit card from profile. To accomplish this first register an old card number. Then, proceed to eliminate access by eliminating current credit card number.
It can be a hassle to make purchases because the cards numbers need to be exchanged. But, it is well worth the peace of mind for me :)
Never use a debit card. The legal protections are smaller than for credit cards unless the bank voluntarily extends additional protections. Which can be withdrawn in a boilerplate notice.
I stopped buying from Amazon after a thief accessed my debit card info via that company, and stole from me!!!!
Amazon did not help me recover my money!! I had to go to my bank to get the help I needed, which I indeed received!!!
Do not buy from Amazon!!!!
I’ve never had a problem with debit cards because I refuse to have one. I use credit cards, pay them off every month and get hundreds of bucks a year in cash back. I very seldom write a check, most everything is on auto-pay.
I had credit troubles a while back and didn’t have a credit card. I set up a special account with a debit card and only kept a small amount in it to cover any purchases. No one ever cleaned it out but if they had tried they wouldn’t have gotten much.
